The University of Oslo (UiO) has announced new PhD Research Fellow positions in Human Geography at its Department of Sociology and Human Geography. The positions are offered under two possible arrangements: Three-year PhD fellowship (research only) Four-year fellowship including 25% compulsory teaching duties The fellowship is designed to support independent research leading to a doctoral degree in Human Geography. Research Expectations and Academic Contribution PhD fellows are expected to develop and carry out independent research projects under academic supervision, based on their submitted research proposals. Eligibility and Academic Requirements Applicants will be evaluated based on academic qualifications, research potential and the quality of their proposed research project. Minimum requirements include: A master’s degree in Human Geography or a closely related field Completion of five years of university-level education (Norwegian equivalent) At least two years (120 ECTS) at master’s level Strong academic performance, typically equivalent to grades A or B at master’s level Proven ability to undertake independent research Applicants whose education was completed outside the EU/EEA or in non-English programmes must demonstrate English proficiency through recognised tests such as TOEFL or IELTS. Selection Criteria and Assessment Process Candidates will be assessed on: Quality and originality of the research proposal Academic performance, including master’s thesis quality Overall academic background and qualifications Feasibility and clarity of the proposed project Potential contribution to departmental research priorities Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews as part of the selection process. Research Proposal Requirements Applicants are required to submit a detailed research proposal of 5–10 pages outlining: Research topic and objectives Theoretical framework Methodological approach Project timeline Contribution to human geography Reflection on academic feasibility within the fellowship period Statement on any use of AI tools in proposal preparation The proposal must demonstrate the candidate’s ability to complete the research within the fellowship timeframe.
