Operating under the Africa, BRICS and Global South (ABGS) Division, the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) serves as the HSRC’s flagship institute for continental collaboration and policy engagement. AISA leads research and implementation support across Africa, functioning as a catalyst for cross-border partnerships and evidence-based policy development. Its work supports the HSRC’s Africa Research Partnership and Collaboration Strategy, while aligning with major continental and global frameworks, including South Africa’s African Agenda, the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s Africa Strategy, the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP 2020–2030), the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AISA collaborates with African governments, multilateral organizations, universities, and civil society to advance inclusive, technology-driven, and sustainable development across the continent. The Role The Senior Research Specialist (SRS) will be appointed within AISA’s sub-unit focusing on Good Governance, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact, interdisciplinary research that supports democratic governance, accountability, and social justice in Africa. The incumbent will provide research leadership, mentorship, and policy advisory support, while engaging with national and continental institutions to strengthen Africa’s development agenda. The role requires occasional international travel in line with AISA’s research mandates and collaborative commitments. Key Responsibilities Conduct and publish policy-relevant and comparative research in the areas of governance, human rights, and rule of law in Africa. Lead or contribute to research proposals, funding applications, and collaborative projects across the continent. Publish peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and reports in accredited and open-access outlets. Collaborate with academic, policy, and civil society stakeholders to disseminate research findings and influence policy dialogues. Participate in evidence-sharing forums, stakeholder consultations, and continental research partnerships that advance regional and global development agendas. Contribute to the mentorship of emerging researchers, fostering innovation, capacity-building, and interdisciplinary research approaches. Integrate technology and innovation into research methodologies, including applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics in governance and development studies. Conduct fieldwork and data collection in various African countries, ensuring that research outputs are contextually relevant and ethically grounded. Advance research on climate change, technology policy, and socioeconomic resilience, exploring the intersection of science, innovation, and governance. Minimum Requirements A PhD (NQF Level 10) or equivalent in the social, natural, or economic sciences. At least five years’ experience in a research environment, ideally within a multidisciplinary or policy-driven context. A minimum of seven publications in accredited peer-reviewed journals. Proven experience in conducting or managing research projects in other African countries. Expertise in governance, human rights, and rule of law, with demonstrated understanding of Agenda 2063, SADC frameworks, and continental policy processes. Advanced proficiency in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, with ability to use statistical analysis software effectively. Strong writing, analytical, and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex research into actionable policy insights. Demonstrated leadership in multi-country research collaborations and evidence-based policy advisory work. The successful candidate will also play a key role in co-developing projects on Artificial Intelligence, digital governance, and the intersection of science, technology, and innovation (STI) with Africa’s socio-political transformation.
