The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) invites South African citizens to apply for the Russian Government Scholarship Programme for the 2026/2027 academic year. This opportunity allows eligible applicants to pursue undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral studies at leading Russian higher education institutions, fostering international academic exchange and collaboration. About the Scholarship The Russian Government Scholarship Programme provides South African students with a chance to study in Russian or English, depending on the university and the chosen field. For programmes taught in Russian, recipients are required to complete a one-year preparatory course, included as part of the scholarship, to develop language and academic readiness for their degree. The scholarship aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen educational ties between South Africa and Russia, contributing to South Africa’s human capital development and global academic engagement. Levels of Study and Deadlines Scholarships are available for the following degree levels: Bachelor’s Degrees Master’s Degrees Doctoral (PhD) Programmes Applications are open from 15 October 2025 until 15 January 2026. The Russian academic year begins in September and ends in May. Priority Fields of Study While all disciplines are considered, the DHET will prioritise applications in areas that align with South Africa’s strategic development goals, particularly in science, technology, and innovation. Key priority fields include: Green Energy Nuclear Physics Technology and Engineering (including Aeronautical Engineering) Physics and Chemistry Other eligible disciplines such as Architecture, Media Studies, Marine Studies, Fine Arts, and Economics Note: Applications for health sciences will not be accepted for the 2026 intake. Applicants intending to study professional degrees such as engineering must consult the relevant professional body in South Africa to verify the appropriateness and recognition of both the degree and institution. Who Can Apply The scholarship is open to South African citizens who meet one of the following eligibility categories: Graduates from Secondary School or TVET College wishing to pursue a Bachelor’s degree. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree wishing to pursue a Master’s degree. Holders of a Master’s degree wishing to pursue a PhD. South African students currently studying in Russia who wish to apply for DHET support for their ongoing studies. Applicants must be in good health, possess a minimum academic average of 60%, and meet the academic entry requirements for a similar programme in a Russian institution. Postgraduate applicants must demonstrate research readiness, while all candidates are expected to show commitment to South Africa’s socio-economic development upon completion of their studies. Application Process All applicants are required to register and complete their submission on the Education in Russia online platform at https://education-in-russia.com/ by 15 January 2026. Step 1: Online Registration Applicants must create a profile and provide personal details, including full name, date of birth, contact information, chosen field of study, education level, and language proficiency. Step 2: Document Submission Applicants must upload scanned copies of: Valid passport (minimum validity of 18 months from planned arrival in Russia) or birth certificate Academic certificates and transcripts Proof of qualification for the selected degree level Each applicant may select up to six universities — with no more than three in one federal district and a maximum of two each in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Only candidates who complete the online process will be considered for nomination and final selection. SAQA verification is required for all qualifications obtained outside South Africa. Current scholarship holders in Russia applying for DHET support must include a progress report and documentation relevant to their current level of study. Minimum Requirements To qualify, applicants must: Be South African citizens in good physical and mental health. Possess a minimum 60% average in previous studies (excluding Life Orientation). Meet programme-specific academic entry requirements. Be available and eligible to begin studies in September 2026. Demonstrate a genuine interest in studying in Russia and a commitment to contribute to South Africa’s growth and development. Important Notes Applicants are responsible for researching their programmes and institutions to ensure their chosen qualifications are recognised in South Africa. It is advisable to confirm recognition through the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and relevant professional bodies before applying. If discrepancies arise between DHET and sponsor information, the sponsor’s official details will take precedence.
