The programme will support two doctoral researchers who will become part of UCL’s internationally recognized academic community. Comprehensive Funding Package The Mary Douglas Research Scholarships provide three years of guaranteed financial support, allowing recipients to focus fully on their doctoral research. The funding package includes: Full coverage of Home (UK) tuition fees. A living stipend paid at UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) minimum rates. Financial support for the standard duration of doctoral study. This comprehensive package aims to reduce financial barriers and enable talented researchers to pursue ambitious and impactful research projects. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must satisfy UCL’s academic requirements for admission to a PhD programme in Anthropology and demonstrate strong potential for conducting independent research. To be considered, candidates must: Meet the academic criteria for doctoral admission at UCL Anthropology. Submit a strong, original, and feasible research proposal. Demonstrate academic excellence and research capability. The scholarship is primarily intended for applicants who qualify for Home (UK) tuition fee status. However, international applicants classified as overseas students are also eligible to apply. In such cases, scholarship funding for tuition fees will be capped at the Home fee level, and applicants will be responsible for securing additional funding to cover the remaining fee difference. Fee status assessments will be conducted according to UCL regulations and UK government guidelines. Research Areas Open for Application UCL Anthropology welcomes proposals across the full spectrum of anthropological research. Areas of interest include: Social Anthropology Cultural Anthropology Evolutionary Anthropology Environmental Anthropology Digital Anthropology Medical Anthropology Visual Anthropology Material Culture Studies The department encourages innovative projects that contribute new insights and advance understanding within these fields. Application Requirements Applications will be evaluated based on the academic strength of both the applicant and the proposed research project. Prospective candidates must submit a complete PhD application package no later than 16 June 2026. Required application materials include: Research Proposal Applicants must submit a research proposal of no more than one page that demonstrates originality, significance, and feasibility. The proposal should clearly indicate the applicant’s wish to be considered for the Mary Douglas Scholarship. Curriculum Vitae Candidates must provide an updated CV of no more than three pages. The CV should highlight: Academic achievements. Research experience. Conference presentations. Peer-reviewed publications. Relevant professional activities. Academic Transcripts Applicants are required to submit: Undergraduate transcripts. Postgraduate transcripts (where applicable). Supervisor Support Letter Each application must include a letter of support from a prospective supervisor within the UCL Anthropology Department. Academic References Candidates must provide: Names of two academic referees. Contact information for each referee. Personal Statement Applicants must submit a personal statement of up to 500 words outlining: Their suitability for doctoral research. Academic and professional qualifications. Relevant experience.
