The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Mozambique has officially launched the 2026 Call for Proposals under the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP). The initiative invites eligible civil society and community-based organisations to submit environmental and climate change project proposals aimed at supporting sustainable development in Mozambique. The programme focuses on projects to be implemented within the terrestrial and aquatic landscapes of Chimanimani-Gorongosa-Marromeu in Sofala Province and Matutuine in Maputo Province. Applications are open from 1 May to 30 May 2026. About the GEF Small Grants Programme The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) supports local organisations in developing countries through financial and technical assistance for projects that address environmental challenges while improving local livelihoods. Implemented in Mozambique by UNDP since 2005, the programme has already supported more than 287 projects across the country. Globally, the initiative has over 30 years of experience empowering: Civil society organisations (CSOs) Community-based organisations (CBOs) Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) The programme currently operates in 99 countries worldwide. Focus Areas for 2026 Project Proposals The 8th Operational Phase of the GEF-SGP seeks projects that contribute to environmental protection, climate resilience, and sustainable community development. The programme encourages interventions focused on: Environmental conservation Climate change adaptation and mitigation Sustainable natural resource management Biodiversity protection Community resilience and livelihoods Ecosystem restoration Sustainable socio-economic development Projects should demonstrate both local impact and broader environmental benefits. Target Project Locations The 2026 funding cycle prioritises projects in specific terrestrial and aquatic landscapes in Mozambique. Target areas include: Chimanimani-Gorongosa-Marromeu landscape in Sofala Province Matutuine landscape in Maputo Province These regions are considered environmentally significant and face increasing climate and sustainability challenges. Objectives of the Programme The GEF-SGP aims to strengthen the capacity of local organisations by combining financial support with technical assistance and knowledge sharing.
