The African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) has opened applications for the 2026 Leadership Program for Emerging African Women in Science. The programme is designed for high-potential young African women working in science and agriculture who are seeking to strengthen their leadership capabilities, expand their professional networks and prepare for greater responsibility within the scientific and agricultural sectors. The customised learning experience targets African women under 35 years of age and focuses on developing the skills, confidence and professional capacity required to become effective leaders and innovators in science. The programme responds to the continuing underrepresentation of women in leadership positions. By providing targeted training, mentoring and coaching, AWARD aims to help emerging women scientists overcome barriers to career advancement and make stronger contributions to agricultural research, development and sustainable development across Africa. Programme Objectives The AWARD Leadership Program for Emerging African Women in Science is designed to address challenges that can limit young women’s progression into leadership roles. Participants will receive practical training intended to help them: Develop effective leadership styles and strengthen their leadership potential. Define clear career pathways and identify opportunities for professional advancement. Build and leverage professional networks to support long-term career development. Develop personal brands and increase confidence when presenting research ideas. Improve their ability to communicate research to potential funders and collaborators. Manage teams effectively and navigate organisational dynamics. Build strategic alliances and professional relationships. Develop the confidence to take calculated risks and pursue leadership opportunities. Programme Structure The programme combines highly interactive learning activities with personalised professional development. Training sessions will focus on leadership, mentoring, proposal writing and communication skills, complemented by one-on-one coaching. The practical nature of the programme is intended to ensure that participants can apply the knowledge and skills gained to their existing professional environments. Participants will have opportunities to reflect on their leadership strengths, identify areas requiring further development and establish strategies for achieving their career objectives. Mentoring and coaching components are also intended to provide guidance as participants navigate professional challenges and pursue increased leadership responsibility. Eligibility Requirements The 2026 programme is aimed at high-potential African women who have established professional experience in science and agriculture. Applicants must meet the following requirements: Be a woman under 35 years of age. Have at least five years of full-time professional experience in the science and agriculture sector. Hold a minimum of a B.Sc. degree or equivalent qualification in an agricultural science discipline from a recognised university. Currently reside in Africa. Be actively engaged in agriculture-related professional work. Demonstrate a strong commitment to personal and professional growth. Clearly articulate their career goals and aspirations. Demonstrate potential and willingness to take on leadership responsibilities. Not currently be a Fellow or Laureate of another fellowship programme offered by AWARD. Applicants should ensure that they satisfy all eligibility requirements before submitting their applications. Why the Programme Matters Women play an important role in scientific research, agricultural innovation and sustainable development, yet their representation in leadership positions remains a significant challenge. Strengthening the leadership pipeline for young women scientists can contribute to more diverse decision-making, stronger research institutions and greater innovation across Africa’s agricultural sector. The AWARD programme therefore provides participants with more than technical training. Its emphasis on leadership, communication, networking, career planning and professional confidence is intended to equip emerging scientists with transferable skills that can support long-term career progression. The programme also provides an opportunity for participants to connect with other women working across Africa’s scientific and agricultural landscape, potentially creating networks for collaboration, mentorship and knowledge exchange. Programme Reach Since its establishment in 2021, the Leadership Program for Emerging African Women in Science has supported 113 participants from 20 African countries. The programme forms part of broader efforts to strengthen women’s participation and leadership in agricultural research and development. The 2026 cohort provides another opportunity for eligible emerging women scientists to develop their leadership capabilities and position themselves for greater professional impact.
