University of Oslo (UiO) – Department of Political ScienceApplication Deadline: November 17, 2025Expected Start Date: April 1, 2026 (negotiable) Position Overview The Department of Political Science at the University of Oslo (UiO) is inviting applications for 1–2 full-time Postdoctoral Fellowships (SKO 1352) in Comparative Politics, Political Data Science, or Public Administration. The appointment is for a period of three years, with the possibility of extension to four years based on teaching needs and candidate qualifications. Successful candidates will contribute to the ERC-funded research project “Governing Elites since the Dawn of Modern Democracy” (GETGOV), under the leadership of Professor Carl Henrik Knutsen. This project investigates how democratic institutions influence the composition and policy outcomes of governing elites from 1789 to the present. About the GETGOV Project GETGOV seeks to answer key questions about political elites and democracy: Has democracy changed who governs? Do autocracies and democracies appoint different types of elites? Are more representative or competent elites linked to better policy outcomes (e.g., education, economic growth)? Does elite composition influence democratic satisfaction? The project builds on the WhoGov and Path to Power datasets, expanding a global database of governing elites and their characteristics (e.g., gender, education, class, occupation, place of birth). Postdoctoral fellows will play a central role in data collection, analysis, publication, and dissemination of project findings. Main Responsibilities Conduct independent and collaborative research aligned with the GETGOV project. Contribute to data collection, analysis, and research outputs. Participate in project workshops and scholarly activities. Publish peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals. Engage with the broader academic community through dissemination efforts. Required Qualifications PhD in Political Science or a closely related field (completed or submitted by the application deadline). Strong research background in comparative politics, political elites, public administration, or quantitative political science. Proficiency in quantitative methods and data analysis.
