Description

FAO-Supported GROW Summer School Opens Applications on Agrobiodiversity and Climate Change A new international learning opportunity has been announced for students, researchers, and early-career professionals interested in sustainable agriculture and environmental science. The 2026 FAO Mountain Partnership GROW Summer School on Agrobiodiversity in a Changing Climate is now accepting applications, offering participants an immersive academic programme focused on biodiversity, food systems, and climate resilience. The initiative is supported technically by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and brings together leading academic and research institutions working at the intersection of agriculture, ecology, and climate adaptation. Applications are open until 20 July 2026. FAO-Supported GROW Summer School Opens Applications on Agrobiodiversity and Climate Change: International Programme Focused on Climate and Agrobiodiversity The GROW Summer School is designed to deepen understanding of agrobiodiversity—the variety and variability of plants, animals, and microorganisms used directly or indirectly for food and agriculture—and its critical role in adapting to climate change. Participants will explore how environmental pressures, biodiversity loss, and climate variability are reshaping global food systems, particularly in mountain and vulnerable ecosystems. The programme aims to equip participants with scientific knowledge and practical tools to support sustainable agricultural development and biodiversity conservation. Collaborative Initiative Led by Global Research Institutions The summer school is organised through a partnership of internationally recognized institutions, including: Sapienza University of Rome, Department of Environmental Biology Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (International Center for Tropical Agriculture) Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research FAO Mountain Partnership Secretariat Technical support is provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), reinforcing the programme’s alignment with global food security and sustainability objectives. This multi-institutional collaboration ensures that participants benefit from diverse academic expertise, field-based research insights, and policy-level perspectives. FAO-Supported GROW Summer School Opens Applications on Agrobiodiversity and Climate Change: Scholarship Opportunities for Selected Participants To enhance accessibility and inclusion, a limited number of scholarships will be made available for selected participants. Funding is provided by: Sapienza University of Rome Raffaella Foundation These scholarships aim to support talented applicants who may require financial assistance to participate in the programme. Due to limited availability, selection is expected to be competitive. Programme Learning Objectives The GROW Summer School focuses on strengthening academic and professional understanding in key areas of environmental and agricultural science. Core learning themes include: Agrobiodiversity conservation and sustainable use Climate change impacts on agriculture and ecosystems Mountain ecosystems and their role in global food security Climate adaptation strategies in rural and vulnerable regions Sustainable food systems and biodiversity-based solutions Participants will engage in interdisciplinary learning that combines scientific research, policy discussions, and practical case studies. Who Can Apply The programme is designed for individuals with academic or professional interest in agriculture, environmental sciences, biodiversity, climate change, and related fields. While specific eligibility criteria may vary, the initiative generally targets: University students (undergraduate and postgraduate levels) Early-career researchers and professionals Individuals working in environmental sustainability, agriculture, or development sectors Applicants with an interest in climate resilience and biodiversity conservation The programme encourages participation from diverse geographical backgrounds, particularly those from regions most affected by climate change and biodiversity loss. Strengthening Global Climate and Food System Knowledge The FAO-supported GROW Summer School reflects growing global recognition of the importance of agrobiodiversity in addressing climate change and food security challenges. By bringing together academic institutions, international organizations, and research networks, the programme fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange. Participants are expected to gain not only theoretical knowledge but also practical insights into how biodiversity-based approaches can contribute to resilient and sustainable food systems. Application Deadline Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their applications before the closing date: Deadline: 20 July 2026 Due to limited scholarship availability and high interest, early application is strongly recommended. A Platform for Future Sustainability Leaders The GROW Summer School offers a unique opportunity for participants to engage with leading experts in agrobiodiversity and climate science while contributing to global conversations on sustainable development. By combining academic learning with international collaboration, the programme aims to develop a new generation of professionals equipped to address the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity.
