The African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) invites early-career African researchers to apply for the Young Leaders in Research (YLR) Program. The YLR Program is a 12-month initiative designed to support emerging scholars in economics and related fields, empowering them to lead policy-relevant, context-driven research that advances Africa’s transformation agenda. The program equips young researchers with funding, mentorship, professional development, and visibility to strengthen their impact on policymaking and sustainable development across the continent. Program Overview The YLR Program provides early-career researchers with resources and guidance to produce high-quality, policy-oriented research. Through mentorship from ACET Senior Fellows, peer learning, and networking opportunities, participants are prepared to translate rigorous research into actionable insights that address Africa’s pressing economic and social challenges. Researchers will also have opportunities to publish and present their work, gaining recognition within academic, policy, and development circles. Eligibility Criteria The program targets African nationals or applicants with permanent residency in African countries. Applicants must demonstrate leadership qualities, a commitment to positively influencing Africa’s development trajectory, and strong academic or professional promise. Applicants must meet the following requirements: Age 35 or younger at the time of application. Completed or currently enrolled in a master’s degree or higher. Background in economics or related fields. Demonstrated interest in research through coursework, internships, volunteer work, personal projects, or contributions to community-based initiatives. Support Provided Selected YLR participants will receive: A research grant of up to $15,000 to support their projects. Mentorship and guidance from ACET Senior Fellows. Peer learning and networking opportunities with other emerging African researchers. Opportunities to present research at conferences and publish findings in relevant forums. Research Focus Areas YLR participants are encouraged to undertake research in areas critical to Africa’s economic and social transformation, including: Gender Equality: Exploring policies and interventions that promote equitable opportunities for women and marginalized groups. Regional Integration: Examining strategies to strengthen intra-African trade, economic collaboration, and policy harmonization. Innovation and Digital Policy: Investigating the role of technological advancement, digital transformation, and policy frameworks in driving economic growth. Green Industrial Transformation: Studying approaches for sustainable industrial development, low-carbon growth, and climate-resilient policies. Application Requirements Prospective candidates must submit the following documents for consideration: A concept note of no more than 800 words outlining the proposed research. A statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) detailing the applicant’s motivation, goals, and leadership potential. Curriculum vitae (CV) highlighting academic, professional, and research experiences. Two academic or professional references.
