The advancement of constitutionalism, human rights, and accountable governance across Africa depends heavily on the strength of its legal scholarship. However, many emerging researchers continue to face systemic challenges, including limited access to mentorship, research funding, and academic publishing platforms. To address these gaps, the African Early Career Legal Scholars’ Network has launched a 2026 call for applications. This initiative is designed to support early career African legal scholars in developing high-quality, policy-relevant research while strengthening their academic careers. About the AECLSN Programme The African Early Career Legal Scholars’ Network is a capacity-building programme aimed at nurturing the next generation of African legal scholars. It specifically targets advanced doctoral candidates and early postdoctoral researchers who are committed to producing impactful research within African contexts. The programme focuses on key thematic areas, including: Legal pluralism Human rights Sustainable development in Africa By aligning research with these themes, the initiative seeks to contribute to stronger legal systems and governance frameworks across the continent. Key Benefits of the Programme Selected participants will gain access to a range of fully funded academic and professional development opportunities. Fully Funded International Workshops Participants will attend two in-person workshops hosted at leading African universities: University of Dar es Salaam (25–26 May 2026) University of the Western Cape (12 November 2026) All expenses are covered, including travel, accommodation, and daily allowances. One-Year Mentorship Programme Each participant will receive structured mentorship from senior legal scholars, providing guidance on research development, academic writing, and career growth. Publication and Research Support The programme offers support in refining manuscripts for submission to leading academic journals, increasing participants’ chances of publication. Capacity Building Scholars will receive training in: Research design Academic writing Grant proposal development Eligibility Criteria The programme is open to: Doctoral candidates nearing completion Postdoctoral researchers who obtained their PhD after 1 January 2021 Selection Priorities To promote equity in African academia, preference will be given to: Scholars from under-resourced institutions, particularly in countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Liberia, Central African Republic, and Republic of the Congo Female researchers (with childcare support provided during workshops) Funding and Support The African Early Career Legal Scholars’ Network is a fully funded programme. Selected participants will receive: Travel expenses Accommodation Daily subsistence allowance This ensures that financial barriers do not prevent talented scholars from participating. The AECLSN 2026 Programme: Application Process Applicants are required to submit the following: A motivation letter (maximum 500 words) outlining their interest and research focus An optional working paper aligned with the programme themes Applications will be evaluated by an independent selection committee based on: Strength of motivation Relevance and quality of research Applicant’s institutional and geographic context Successful candidates will be required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) before the programme begins. Important Dates Application Deadline: 9 April 2026 Notification of Results: 17 April 2026 Early application is strongly encouraged due to the competitive nature of the programme.
