Applications open for Allan Gray entrepreneurial scholarships covering tuition, boarding and more The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation has opened applications for its Allan Gray Scholarship Programme for Entrepreneurial Development, providing an opportunity for eligible South African learners to receive financial support for high school education while developing entrepreneurial and leadership skills. The scholarship is aimed at Grade 6 learners who demonstrate academic potential, financial need and an entrepreneurial mindset. Successful scholars receive funding to attend leading partner high schools in South Africa, together with a range of developmental interventions designed to nurture their potential. The programme provides support beyond school fees, with the scholarship covering tuition and boarding, a monthly allowance, uniforms, toiletries, clothing, stationery, textbooks and extracurricular activities. What is the Allan Gray Scholarship Programme? The Allan Gray Scholarship Programme is designed to identify and support young South African learners with the potential to become future entrepreneurial leaders. The programme combines financial assistance with mentorship, learning opportunities and exposure to entrepreneurship. According to the Foundation, the programme aims to develop scholars who demonstrate: Entrepreneurial thinking Confidence Leadership qualities Problem-solving abilities A growth mindset A desire to create value An understanding of collaboration and community An aspiration to become an Allan Gray Fellow The programme seeks to equip young people with skills and attitudes that can contribute to South Africa’s future economic and social development. Who can apply? The scholarship is specifically targeted at learners who meet the programme’s eligibility requirements. Applicants must: Be current Grade 6 learners in the year of application. Be South African citizens. Be aged 11 or 12 in Grade 6. Have been born in 2014 or 2015. Demonstrate financial need. Achieve a minimum of 70% in both English and Mathematics. Parents, guardians and prospective applicants should carefully check the official requirements before submitting an application. What does the scholarship cover? Successful Allan Gray Scholars receive comprehensive financial and educational support. Entrepreneurial development and mentorship The Allan Gray Scholarship is not only focused on academic education. The programme combines face-to-face learning, online learning, peer learning and one-on-one interventions. Scholars also receive mentorship from a dedicated Programme Officer, who supports their development throughout the programme. Learning opportunities for scholars Participants gain access to several additional learning and development opportunities. These include: Workshops An annual entrepreneurial conference Online Learning Campus Interactive online learning Speakers and seminars Mentorship Peer learning Entrepreneurial development activities The programme also creates a community of young people who share an interest in entrepreneurship and personal development. Developing future Allan Gray Fellows A key objective of the programme is to prepare scholars for continued entrepreneurial development beyond high school. The programme seeks to develop learners who have an appreciation for collaboration and community and who are interested in becoming Allan Gray Fellows in the future. Through the scholarship experience, learners can begin developing the entrepreneurial mindset and leadership qualities associated with the wider Allan Gray Orbis Foundation ecosystem. Application process The application process involves several stages. Applicants must first submit a completed application form together with the required supporting documentation. Successful applicants will then be invited to write the Foundation’s Grade 6 English and Mathematics assessment in December 2026. Candidates who successfully progress beyond the assessment stage will be invited to interviews in early 2027. Recommended candidates will subsequently be invited to placement schools for additional interviews. Candidates whose recommendations are approved by the relevant placement schools will be awarded the Allan Gray Scholarship in May 2027. Once a scholarship has been awarded, the Foundation, placement school and scholar’s custodian will sign a Memorandum of Agreement. Important application information Applications are currently open. The Foundation provides both an online application option and an application form that can be downloaded from its website.
