This is a full-time, remote position open to candidates based outside Afghanistan. The role plays a critical part in ensuring financial accountability, donor compliance, and effective grant and budget management in support of AUAF’s mission. About the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) Established in 2006, the American University of Afghanistan is the country’s only nationally accredited, private, not-for-profit, non-partisan, and coeducational institution of higher education. AUAF has grown from an initial cohort of 50 students to serving more than 1,700 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Position Summary The Senior Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing key financial management functions, with a strong focus on grant management, donor reporting, payroll oversight, audits, and compliance. The role ensures the timely production of accurate financial reports and supports both internal and external stakeholders with high-quality financial data and analysis. Working closely with the Director of Finance and the Development Department, the Senior Finance Manager supports monthly, quarterly, and annual grant and budget review processes. The position also contributes to proposal development, grant opening and closeout procedures, and the strengthening of financial systems and controls. Key Outcomes The successful candidate will be expected to: Ensure compliance with AUAF financial policies and donor requirements Deliver accurate and timely financial and grant-related reports Support effective budget monitoring and financial planning Contribute to the continuous improvement of finance systems and processes Core Responsibilities The Senior Finance Manager’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Reviewing and updating the Student Finance Manual Supervising the preparation of U.S. Department of State (DOS) liquidation and reimbursement reports Preparing DOS quarterly financial reports and SF-425 reports Preparing and reviewing DOS cash advance requests Reviewing monthly and quarterly financial reports Reviewing donor, sponsor, and scholarship financial reports Managing and reviewing PowerCampus financial data during assessment processes Reviewing monthly national payroll Reviewing monthly international payroll Managing and supporting staff on: Scholarships and student finance issues Accounts receivable processes Cooperating with the finance team during internal and external audits Supporting the finance team with: Overall accounting activities Troubleshooting issues related to Dynamics 365 Performing any other duties assigned by the supervisor Required Skills and Competencies Candidates should demonstrate the following skills: Strong ability to work effectively within a team environment Capacity to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel Strong communication and customer service skills High attention to detail and strong analytical abilities Qualifications Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field Experience working with accounting applications or ERP systems Familiarity with Microsoft Business Central (BC) is preferred Professional Experience A minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience in finance, accounting, or grants management Experience working with donor-funded projects, preferably in higher education or non-profit environments Demonstrated experience in payroll review, financial reporting, and audit support Why Join AUAF?
