Hornby Educational Trust, in partnership with the University of Exeter, is offering up to ten (10) fully funded Master’s scholarships for the MEd TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) programme, commencing in September 2026. The scholarship is designed to support capacity building in English language teaching in low- and middle-income countries by investing in experienced teachers and education professionals who demonstrate strong potential to make a sustained impact on TESOL policy, practice, and professional development in their home contexts. About the Scholarship The A.S. Hornby Educational Trust has a long-standing commitment to strengthening English language education worldwide. Its scholarships target educators who: Have significant professional experience in TESOL or related fields Show academic excellence and leadership potential Are committed to contributing to the development of English language teaching and learning in their home countries This scholarship is exclusively available for the MEd TESOL programme at the University of Exeter and is not applicable to PGCert or PGDip pathways. All applications are jointly assessed by the University of Exeter and the Hornby Trust. What the Scholarship Covers Each Hornby Scholarship is fully funded and includes: Full University of Exeter tuition fees A monthly stipend to cover accommodation and living expenses Additional grants to cover approved study-related costs UK visa and National Health Service (NHS) fees Return international travel costs Duration: 1 year (full-time study) Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet all of the following requirements: Be a resident of and working in a country classified as Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle Income, or Upper Middle Income according to the OECD DAC list Have a minimum of three (3) years of full-time TESOL teaching or related professional experience completed after their first degree Hold an undergraduate degree with results equivalent to at least a UK Upper Second Class (2:1) Not already hold: A doctoral degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, English, or a related field A Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, English, or a related field from a UK university Applicants must also be able to meet the University of Exeter’s academic and English language entry requirements for the MEd TESOL programme. How to Apply Applicants should not apply directly to the MEd TESOL programme at first. The application process follows three steps: Submit the Hornby Scholarship application form Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview and provided with instructions to apply for the MEd TESOL programme Final scholarship offers are conditional on admission to the University of Exeter’s MEd TESOL programme Only candidates shortlisted by the Hornby Trust will be required to submit a university application.
