University of Turin has announced applications for three fully funded postdoctoral research positions under the HumanLaw ERC Consolidator Grant project. The opportunities are open to early-career scholars with expertise in Neo-Latin Philology, Digital Humanities, and Legal History. The positions form part of the HumanLaw research initiative, an ambitious European Research Council (ERC)-funded project examining the intersections between Renaissance humanism and legal culture in Italy during the late medieval and early modern periods. About the HumanLaw ERC Project The HumanLaw project is funded through a prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant and aims to explore the role of Renaissance humanists and jurists in shaping intellectual, political, literary, and legal developments between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. Hosted at the University of Turin, the project adopts an interdisciplinary research approach that combines legal history, philology, archival studies, and digital humanities methodologies. The initiative seeks to deepen scholarly understanding of how humanist culture interacted with legal traditions during the Renaissance period. The research programme will involve collaboration among an international team of scholars, including: Six postdoctoral researchers Two doctoral students Senior academic researchers International collaborators in Renaissance and legal studies Available Postdoctoral Positions The University of Turin is currently recruiting scholars for three specialised research roles within the HumanLaw project. 1. Postdoctoral Position in Neo-Latin Philology The first position is designed for a scholar with expertise in Neo-Latin Philology. The selected researcher will focus on epistolary correspondence between Italian jurists and humanists from the late fourteenth century to the early sixteenth century. Research responsibilities will include: Studying Renaissance-era Latin correspondence Analysing intellectual exchanges among jurists and humanists Examining historical manuscript materials Contributing to broader project outputs related to Renaissance legal culture Candidates with strong philological training and familiarity with Renaissance Latin texts are strongly encouraged to apply. 2. Postdoctoral Position in Digital Humanities The second position targets researchers with a background in Digital Humanities and computational research methodologies. The successful candidate will: Collect bibliographical and archival data Document the relationship between Renaissance humanists and legal culture Develop a graph database for querying and analysing collected materials Support digital infrastructure development for the HumanLaw project This role offers an opportunity to apply digital tools and data-driven methodologies to humanities and historical research. Postdoctoral Position in Legal History The third position is intended for a scholar specialising in Legal History. The selected researcher will investigate the non-legal intellectual production of Italian jurists during the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, including works related to: Literature Philosophy Politics Historical writing Humanist scholarship The project seeks to understand how legal scholars contributed to broader Renaissance intellectual culture beyond formal legal texts. Researchers with expertise in Renaissance studies, intellectual history, or early modern legal traditions are encouraged to submit applications. Research Environment and Collaboration The HumanLaw project emphasises collaborative and interdisciplinary scholarship. Successful applicants will become part of a dynamic international research team working within a shared intellectual environment in Turin. The university has highlighted that continued in-person presence in Turin throughout the duration of the contract is required in order to foster academic collaboration and exchange among team members.
