The U.S. Embassy & Consulates in South Africa has announced that applications are now open for the Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program (SARSP) for the 2027–2028 academic cycle. The programme offers South African university faculty and research institute professionals an opportunity to conduct advanced research in the United States for a period ranging from three to nine months. The closing date for applications is 30 August 2026. Successful applicants will undertake their research visits between 1 August 2027 and 31 March 2028, with all activities to be completed by 31 December 2028. About the Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program is part of the broader Fulbright exchange initiative administered by the United States government. It is designed to strengthen academic collaboration between South Africa and the United States by enabling experienced scholars to conduct high-level research at leading U.S. universities and research institutions. The programme supports scholars in advancing their academic expertise while contributing to the development of teaching, research, and curriculum innovation at their home institutions in South Africa. Research undertaken under the programme is expected to enhance academic capacity and promote long-term institutional collaboration between participating countries. Programme Objectives and Scope The Fulbright SARSP is structured to support established academics with a strong record of research, teaching, and publication. The programme is not intended for early-stage researchers or general professional travel, but rather for senior scholars seeking to expand their academic contributions through international research engagement. Key objectives include: Conducting advanced, high-impact academic research in the United States Strengthening teaching and research capacity at South African institutions Building long-term academic partnerships between South Africa and the United States Promoting cross-cultural academic exchange and collaboration Supporting knowledge transfer across global academic networks Research fields are open across disciplines, with the exception of clinical medical research involving patient contact, which is not eligible under the programme. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet strict eligibility requirements to be considered for the Fulbright SARSP. Core eligibility conditions include: Holding a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree at the time of application A strong record of scholarly research, teaching, and publication At least three years of university-level teaching experience (preferred) South African citizenship or permanent residency with at least five years of residency status No dual South African–United States citizenship The programme gives preference to applicants who: Have not previously received a Fulbright scholarship Have limited or no prior academic experience in the United States Demonstrate strong potential for academic leadership and institutional impact Applicants must also demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency to carry out research and collaborate effectively. Formal TOEFL testing is not required, although language assessment may be conducted at the discretion of the U.S. Embassy if necessary. In addition, all selected scholars must be in good health and are required to submit a medical history and examination report. Research Grant Coverage and Benefits The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program provides comprehensive financial and logistical support to selected scholars. Funding is designed to enable full participation in academic research activities without financial barriers. Grant benefits include: Monthly stipend based on the cost of living in the host U.S. location Round-trip international airfare Excess baggage allowance for return travel Professional development allowance for books, conferences, and seminars Settling-in allowance upon arrival in the United States Primary medical insurance coverage Visa application fee coverage Additional support such as laboratory fees may be considered on a limited, case-by-case basis, subject to available funding. Application Process Applicants must complete an online application through the official Fulbright application platform. The process requires submission of detailed academic and research documentation. Required application components include: A comprehensive research proposal with clear methodology Three confidential letters of reference submitted directly by referees Curriculum vitae outlining academic and professional experience Optional letter of invitation from a U.S. host institution (strongly encouraged) Applicants are encouraged to develop well-structured research proposals that are accessible to interdisciplinary review panels while demonstrating academic rigour and feasibility.
