Host Institution: University of Amsterdam (UvA)Programme: Research Priority Area (RPA) – Decolonial FuturesFellowship Period: Academic Year 2025–2026 (1–3 months)Application Deadline: 6 December 2025Email for submissions: decolonialfutures@uva.nl Advancing Decolonial Scholarship at the University of Amsterdam The Research Priority Area (RPA) Decolonial Futures at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) invites applications for its Scholars in Residence Programme 2026. This initiative provides an opportunity for scholars from around the world to spend between one and three months at the UvA, where they can present their work, engage with local researchers, and further develop projects that critically explore questions of coloniality, knowledge, and justice. The programme encourages collaboration between visiting fellows and UvA staff affiliated with one of the RPA’s three contributing faculties—Humanities, Law, and Behavioural and Social Sciences—fostering a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment for decolonial research and exchange. About the RPA Decolonial Futures The RPA Decolonial Futures was established to advance conversations and collaborations on decolonial thought across disciplines. It approaches “coloniality” as a form of power that emerged in the modern period, shaping how people are categorized, how wealth and influence are distributed, and how exclusion is perpetuated within global systems. By bridging diverse academic traditions and research perspectives, the RPA seeks to contribute to rethinking structures of knowledge, justice, and sustainability, and to create pathways for equitable futures beyond colonial legacies. Research Themes The programme welcomes proposals from across the social sciences, humanities, and legal studies. While the call is open to all topics relevant to decolonial research, the RPA particularly encourages applications that engage with two or more of the following focus areas: Museums, Archives & Cultural PracticesExamining restitution debates, colonial art acquisitions, and the politics of monuments and memory. Migrations, Mobility & BordersInvestigating how colonial and neocolonial dynamics continue to shape migration patterns, citizenship, and border control policies. Ecology, Sustainability & Climate ChangeExploring decolonial perspectives on environmental justice, climate reparations, and sustainable futures. Applicants are encouraged to propose projects that contribute to ongoing research within these areas and foster meaningful engagement with local and global academic communities. Eligibility and Requirements The call is open to early-career and senior scholars from any discipline. Applicants must: Hold a PhD at the time of application. Demonstrate a strong research record or potential in decolonial studies or a related field. Establish a connection with a UvA partner, who must be an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor affiliated with one of the participating faculties. Preference and Encouragement Applications are especially encouraged from scholars based in or originating from colonised and formerly colonised regions, whose perspectives and experiences are vital to global conversations on decoloniality. Role of the UvA Partner Each visiting fellow must have an established UvA host who will: Co-host the scholar within their faculty, department, or research centre. Provide workspace and access to institutional facilities. Co-organise at least two events—including one Masterclass for the RPA community. Collaborate on research dissemination within and beyond UvA. Submit a brief final report summarising outcomes and activities within eight weeks after the fellowship concludes. Fellowship Benefits The Scholars in Residence Programme provides financial and institutional support to enable fellows to conduct research and participate fully in UvA’s academic life. Funding and Support Includes: Accommodation in Amsterdam (organised and covered by the RPA). A living allowance to support subsistence during the residency. Travel reimbursement: Up to €500 for scholars travelling from within Europe. Up to €1,500 for scholars travelling from outside Europe. Visa support and payment of visa-related fees (where applicable). Fellows must ensure they have adequate health and travel insurance for the duration of their stay. Practical Information on Housing and Family Support While the RPA provides an accommodation subsidy, fellows are responsible for securing suitable housing. The programme can only subsidize options capable of issuing official invoices (e.g., serviced apartments, licensed rentals, or verified AirBnB hosts). Please note that childcare and family accommodation arrangements are the responsibility of the fellow. Due to high housing demand in Amsterdam, applicants are strongly encouraged to plan their stay and housing needs well in advance. Application Procedure Applicants must submit the following materials by 6 December 2025 to decolonialfutures@uva.nl with the subject line:“Decolonial Futures Fellows Application” Required Documents A 750-word proposal addressing: Rationale for the visit and expected contribution to decolonial research at UvA. Research objectives and relevance to the Amsterdam and global scholarly communities. Proposed work plan, including teaching, workshops, or collaborations. Any available co-financing or institutional support. A current CV of the applicant. A letter of commitment from the proposed UvA host confirming institutional support. Fellowship Expectations At the end of the residency, fellows will submit: A 750-word reflective report on their residency experience. A summary of research outputs, events, and collaborations achieved in partnership with their UvA host. The report helps document impact and contributes to the RPA’s ongoing efforts to foster international scholarly exchange. Why Apply? The RPA Decolonial Futures Scholars in Residence Programme offers a unique opportunity to engage with one of Europe’s most vibrant research communities and contribute to cutting-edge scholarship on decoloniality, justice, and sustainability. Fellows will join a growing network of international researchers working at the intersection of theory, policy, and practice, developing new frameworks for understanding the legacies and possibilities of global decolonisation.
