Application Deadline
October 31, 2026
The Overseas Press Club Foundation (OPC Foundation) Scholar Awards 2026 are inviting applications from eligible university students interested in pursuing careers in international journalism. The awards provide financial support for students undertaking independent journalism work or fellowships with leading international news organisations. The application deadline is 15 November 2026. Eligible applicants must be full-time university students and must either be international students studying at a U.S. college or university or U.S. citizens studying abroad. What Are the OPC Foundation Scholar Awards? The Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar Awards are designed to support emerging journalists who want to develop careers covering international communities, global issues and events outside their home countries. In a typical year, the Foundation awards 18 scholarships and fellowships. Award recipients receive either: $3,000 to support independent journalism work; or $4,000 to fund time in a bureau of a leading news organisation, such as the Associated Press, Reuters or Bloomberg. The programme is primarily aimed at students at the beginning of their journalism careers rather than established mid-career professionals. The Foundation also places particular emphasis on journalism that demonstrates international perspective, strong reporting and the ability to tell compelling stories. Who Can Apply? To be eligible for the 2026 Scholar Awards, applicants must be: Currently enrolled full-time in a university degree programme; A college junior, senior or graduate student at the application deadline; Interested in pursuing international journalism; and Either an international student studying at a U.S. college or university or a U.S. citizen studying abroad. This means that international students studying at universities in the United States can apply regardless of nationality, provided they meet the other requirements. However, students studying at universities outside the United States who are not U.S. citizens do not meet the eligibility criteria stated by the Foundation. What Does the Award Provide? Successful applicants can receive one of two forms of support. $3,000 Scholarship The $3,000 scholarship can be used to support independent journalism work and academic or professional goals related to international journalism. $4,000 Fellowship The $4,000 fellowship is intended to fund time working in a bureau of a leading news organisation. Previous fellowship placements have included organisations such as Reuters, Associated Press and Bloomberg. The Foundation’s previous recipients demonstrate that the programme can provide opportunities to gain practical experience in international reporting and develop professional networks. The file must not exceed 10MB and should be named using the format: Last name_First name The application consists of three main components. 1. A written sample of approximately 500 words must also explain the work and the applicant’s role. Four of the 18 awards are reserved for international business or economic coverage. Applicants working in this area are encouraged to demonstrate knowledge of subjects such as: International trade Global finance Emerging markets Immigration Climate Public health Global economic developments Applicants do not necessarily need to have travelled internationally to demonstrate an interest in international journalism. The Foundation notes that previous successful work has covered international communities and issues within the United States. What Makes a Strong Application? Applicants should therefore make sure that their journalism sample: Demonstrates original reporting; Has a clear beginning, middle and end; Shows why the story matters; Is carefully edited and proofread; Follows the required length and format; and Clearly identifies the applicant’s own contribution. The Foundation also states that all application materials must be the applicant’s own journalism work. Any use of AI must be responsible and clearly disclosed. Applications must be submitted in English. If the original journalism was produced in another language, applicants must provide an English translation. Award Reception and Professional Network Successful recipients will be contacted by mid-January 2027 and their names will be published on the Foundation’s website. The Scholar Awards reception will take place in New York City in March 2027. The event will form part of a two-day programme featuring journalism-related training and networking with professional journalists, and winners are required to participate. Beyond the financial award, recipients become part of a network of international journalists and previous Scholar Award recipients.
