Advancing Oral History Education at the Oral History Center At the Oral History Center (OHC), education is central to its mission of recording and preserving the history of California and its global connections. As part of the UC Berkeley Library, the Center trains new generations of scholars, educators, and professionals in the theory and practice of oral history. Through workshops, institutes, internships, and remote learning resources, the OHC equips participants with the tools to design, conduct, and interpret oral history projects across disciplines. A Comprehensive Approach to Oral History Training The Oral History Center offers educational programming designed to serve learners at multiple stages of their academic and professional journeys. These opportunities include: Daylong and weeklong workshops focused on oral history methodology Remote interviewing tutorials that address digital tools and best practices Interviewing guides and practical tips for fieldwork preparation Graduate internships and fellowship opportunities Specialized institutes for advanced scholars For K–16 educators and undergraduate students, the Center also provides dedicated resources to support classroom integration, internships, and employment pathways. Each program emphasizes both theory and practice, ensuring participants not only understand oral history frameworks but also gain hands-on interviewing experience. Summer Institute in Art History (June 8–21, 2026): Oral History Education In 2026, the Oral History Center will host a two-week Summer Institute in Art History on the UC Berkeley campus. Designed for scholars and professionals in art history and visual culture, the program offers immersive training in oral history methodology and application. Key Details: Dates: June 8–21, 2026 Location: UC Berkeley campus Application window: February 1–March 1, 2026 Application fee: $5 Cohort size: Up to 20 fellows Eligibility: U.S.-based professionals not currently enrolled in degree programs The Institute welcomes: Professors and curators Postdoctoral researchers and fellows Museum professionals Independent scholars and artists Applicants must work in art history or related fields and demonstrate an interest in integrating oral history into their research, exhibitions, or teaching practices. Program Goals and Learning Outcomes: Oral History Education The Summer Institute is structured to provide both conceptual grounding and applied skills. Participants will: Engage with current best practices in oral history theory and methodology Develop practical interviewing techniques Practice conducting interviews in workshop settings Receive one-on-one advising Reflect on how oral history intersects with visual culture and art historical research Instruction combines lectures, small-group workshops, field visits around the San Francisco Bay Area, and individual work time. The curriculum is led by experienced OHC staff alongside distinguished scholars and professionals. Guest contributors have included leading voices in art and visual studies such as: Bridget Cooks Elaine Yau Shannon Jackson Anneka Lenssen Their participation ensures interdisciplinary dialogue and exposure to diverse approaches to oral history in practice. The program is offered at no cost to selected fellows, made possible through generous support from the Getty. A Legacy of Excellence in Oral History Founded in 1953, the Oral History Center is among the oldest oral history programs in the United States. Over more than seven decades, it has conducted thousands of interviews across a wide range of topics, including the lived experiences of artists, arts administrators, philanthropists, and cultural leaders. Today, the Center maintains: Over 25,000 hours of recorded interviews Thousands of professionally transcribed oral histories Extensive digital access through the UC Berkeley Library Digital Collections The majority of transcripts have been digitized and made publicly accessible, reflecting the Center’s commitment to broad dissemination and scholarly use. Partnerships in the Arts and Cultural Sector The Oral History Center has collaborated with leading institutions in the arts and museum world, including: J.
