UNU-WIDER is inviting applications for three internship opportunities based in Helsinki. The internships provide early-career professionals and students with the opportunity to contribute to international development research and operations within a global policy environment. The six-month internships are expected to begin in August or September 2026, with applications closing on 24 May 2026. About UNU-WIDER UNU-WIDER is the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research. The institute conducts policy-relevant economic research focused on sustainable development, inequality reduction, and global economic transformation. Based in Helsinki, UNU-WIDER collaborates with researchers, governments, and international organizations to advance evidence-based policy solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Internship Opportunities Available The institute is currently recruiting interns across three different areas: Research Intern The Research Intern will support projects related to: Tax research for development Data analysis and management Research coordination Academic and policy events This role is ideal for candidates with strong analytical skills and an interest in development economics, taxation, and policy research. Microsoft Power Platform Solutions Intern This internship focuses on digital systems and workflow support within the organization. Responsibilities may include: Supporting data management systems Developing applications and automated workflows Assisting with Microsoft Power Platform solutions Improving internal operational processes The role is suitable for candidates with technical skills and interest in digital transformation and organizational systems. Programme and Partnerships Intern The Programme and Partnerships Intern will support coordination and stakeholder engagement activities. Key tasks may include: Assisting with project coordination Supporting partnerships and external engagement Contributing to event organization Administrative and programme support This role is well suited to candidates interested in international development management and global partnerships. Internship Structure and Environment The internships offer participants exposure to a highly international and research-driven work environment. Interns will have the opportunity to engage with development experts and contribute to initiatives connected to the Sustainable Development Goals. The positions are designed to provide practical experience while supporting UNU-WIDER’s broader research and policy mission. Eligibility Requirements Applicants should: Have an interest in economic development and international affairs Be available for a six-month internship beginning in August or September 2026 Possess the legal right to work in Finland The organization is seeking motivated and internationally minded candidates who can contribute effectively in a collaborative environment. Are UNU-WIDER internships paid? UNU-WIDER typically provides a monthly stipend to interns who are not receiving other financial support (e.g., from a university or scholarship). Recent UNU system internship terms show stipends around EUR 1,300–1,430 per month (full-time equivalent), paid monthly and sometimes prorated for part-time roles. Important conditions The stipend is not automatic for everyone — you must declare if you are not receiving other funding. Interns must often be based in Finland (Helsinki) or have the legal right to work there (some calls are strict about this). Interns are not UN staff, and the stipend is meant to cover basic living costs, not a salary.
