The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), with generous support from the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, has launched a prestigious Early-Career Research Fellowship Programme aimed at strengthening research capacity across Africa and enhancing global research competitiveness. This fellowship will support up to forty-two (42) early-career researchers to undertake high-quality, impactful research at ARUA’s research platforms, including its thirteen (13) Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and twenty-two (22) Africa–Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs). The programme is designed to foster advanced research skills, international collaboration, and knowledge production that responds to Africa’s development priorities while contributing to global scholarship. About the Fellowship Programme The ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship is a six-month, fully supported research placement hosted at selected ARUA institutions and partner institutions under the CoEs and CoREs framework. Fellows will be embedded in established research environments, working closely with senior scholars, research teams, and institutional partners. The fellowship seeks to: Strengthen the research pipeline of Africa-based scholars Promote globally competitive, interdisciplinary research Support collaboration between African and European research institutions Advance gender equity in research leadership A minimum of 70% of the fellowships are reserved for female researchers, reflecting ARUA’s strong commitment to inclusive and equitable research ecosystems. Fellowship Duration and Commencement Options Each fellowship will run for six months and must be completed between March 2026 and February 2027. There are two intake options, allowing applicants to select the period that best aligns with their availability and research plans. Option 2: September 2026 – February 2027 Application deadline: 15 July 2026 Applicants may apply for only one option and must indicate their preferred start period during the application process. Eligibility Criteria To be eligible for the ARUA Early-Career Research Fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements: Be an early-career researcher with a completed PhD Be no older than 35 years at the time of application Be affiliated with or conducting research relevant to one of ARUA’s CoEs or Africa–Europe CoREs Demonstrate strong research potential and alignment with the selected research theme Be available to commit fully to the six-month fellowship period Female researchers are strongly encouraged to apply, in line with the programme’s gender equity targets. Research Focus Areas Fellows will conduct research aligned with the thematic priorities of ARUA’s Centres of Excellence and Africa–Europe Clusters of Excellence. These cover a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to: Climate change and sustainability Health, biosciences, and public health Governance, inequality, and social transformation Data science, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation Energy, food systems, and natural resources Applicants must select a specific CoE or CoRE and clearly demonstrate how their proposed research aligns with its focus. Application Requirements Applicants are required to submit a complete online application, including the following documents in Word or PDF format: Cover letter Full academic CV Institutional letter of support Evidence of PhD award Brief research concept note Two academic writing samples Biodata page of a valid passport Contact details for two academic referees Incomplete applications will not be considered. Selection Process Applications will be assessed through a competitive, merit-based process. Selection criteria include: Academic excellence and research track record Quality, originality, and feasibility of the proposed research Alignment with ARUA’s research priorities Potential for long-term academic and societal impact Commitment to collaboration and knowledge sharing Successful applicants will be notified following the completion of the review and selection process.
