Announced on 30 September 2026, the initiative will distribute US$8 million over the next two years to support partnerships addressing educational inequality through collaboration, innovation and responsible responses to emerging technologies. Selected partnerships can request up to US$1 million over two years, alongside opportunities to participate in a learning cohort and receive non-financial support, including Atlassian tools and expertise. The foundation is seeking organisations that work collaboratively to improve educational outcomes for learners experiencing poverty or disadvantage. Rather than supporting isolated technology projects, the initiative emphasises collective action involving multiple stakeholders working towards shared goals. This presents a potential funding opportunity for eligible nonprofits, including organisations working in the Global South, that are developing collaborative approaches to educational access, digital inclusion and future-ready learning. Applications close on 30 October 2026. What Is the Atlassian Foundation Open Call? The Atlassian Foundation is the philanthropic arm associated with Atlassian, a technology company known for its collaboration and productivity software. Through this open call, the foundation aims to help disadvantaged learners benefit from changes taking place in education as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly influential. The initiative recognises that AI could expand access to learning resources, support teachers and improve pathways to employment. However, without appropriate safeguards and equitable access, emerging technologies could also deepen existing inequalities. The foundation therefore wants to support partnerships that bring together organisations capable of addressing these challenges at scale. Potential collaborators may include nonprofits, schools, educators, government institutions, community organisations, technical partners and other relevant stakeholders. The key consideration is whether the proposed initiative demonstrates meaningful collaboration towards a shared educational goal. Funding Benefits and Support Successful partnerships can access several forms of support through the programme. 1. Grants of up to US$1 million Eligible partnerships can request up to US$1 million over two years to support qualifying initiatives. The maximum amount is not a guaranteed award; applicants should consult the official application guide for funding conditions and proposal requirements. 2. Two-year implementation period The funding is designed to support initiatives over two years, allowing partnerships to develop, implement and learn from approaches intended to improve educational outcomes. 3. Learning cohort Selected partners will participate in a learning cohort that supports peer-to-peer knowledge exchange. This creates opportunities to share experiences, discuss challenges and learn from other organisations working towards similar objectives. 4. Technology and expertise Partners will also receive non-financial support, including access to Atlassian tools and expertise, subject to the programme’s arrangements. Together, these benefits are intended to strengthen collaboration and help initiatives achieve greater impact than individual organisations could accomplish independently. Priority Areas and What the Foundation Wants to Fund Applicants must demonstrate that their initiatives meet three central criteria. Direct relief of disadvantage Proposals must directly address poverty or disadvantage affecting a clearly identified group of beneficiaries. Organisations should explain who the learners are, the barriers they face and how the proposed initiative will improve their educational opportunities. Relevant issues may include unequal access to learning resources, limited digital opportunities, inadequate educational support and barriers affecting learners in under-resourced communities, provided the proposed work meets the foundation’s criteria. Collective action The foundation is looking for partnerships involving multiple stakeholders working together through shared goals, implementation and learning. Applications should demonstrate how the participating organisations contribute complementary expertise and resources to address a systemic challenge that no single organisation could effectively resolve alone. A proposal from one organisation without a meaningful collaborative model may not meet this requirement. Evolving education in the AI era Initiatives must help education adapt to emerging technologies in ways that reduce, rather than deepen, inequality. Potential approaches could include improving access to AI-supported learning, strengthening teachers’ capacity to respond to technological change, developing future-ready skills or establishing collaborative systems that protect disadvantaged learners. The foundation does not require applicants to use AI simply for the sake of adopting new technology. Where AI is proposed, its use must be deliberate, appropriate and accompanied by consideration of risks and safeguards. Applicants choosing not to use AI should also explain the rationale behind that decision. Who Is Eligible to Apply? The open call is available globally to registered nonprofit organisations. Applicants should establish that their organisation satisfies the registration requirements and that the proposed initiative aligns with the foundation’s three funding priorities. Organisations should be prepared to demonstrate: Their legal nonprofit status and organisational capacity. A clearly identified disadvantaged learner population. A credible plan for directly addressing educational inequality. Meaningful collaboration between multiple stakeholders. A clear connection to education in the AI era. An appropriate approach to technology, including relevant risks and safeguards. A realistic implementation plan and intended outcomes for the two-year funding period. The call is not presented as an individual scholarship or personal grant. Individuals applying in their personal capacity should not assume they are eligible. Interested organisations should review the official eligibility checklist and application guide before submitting a proposal. Examples of Collaborative Initiatives The foundation’s announcement highlights three existing partnerships that illustrate its interest in collective action. CareerVillage — AI for Career Development Coalition: This US-based initiative brings together more than 195 organisations across education, workforce development, research and philanthropy to develop safe, ethical and accessible AI career coaching for underserved young people. Mantra4Change — Collective for Future Readiness: This initiative in India aligns government, schools, communities and technical partners across two states to strengthen AI literacy and future-ready skills among adolescents in government schools. Teach For All — Teachers as Co-Architects of AI: This global initiative mobilises educators from under-resourced schools to shape classroom uses of AI and share lessons across its international network. These examples demonstrate the emphasis on partnerships, shared learning and educational impact. They should not be interpreted as a list of the only approaches eligible for funding. How to Apply for the Atlassian Foundation Grant Interested nonprofit organisations should follow these steps: Review the official guidance: Read the application guide and eligibility checklist to understand the programme’s requirements. Assess organisational eligibility: Confirm that the applicant is a registered nonprofit and that the proposed initiative meets the three funding criteria. Develop a collaborative proposal: Identify the participating organisations, their respective roles and the shared educational challenge they intend to address. Explain the intended impact: Describe the disadvantaged learners who will benefit, the proposed activities and how the initiative will address educational inequality in the AI era. Submit through Goodstack: Complete the online application through the foundation’s designated application portal. Apply before the deadline: Submit the completed application by 30 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. AEDT. Application portal: https://nomination.goodstack.org/grantprogram_000000DOmv2rO99eX0M9t3Oqj1mQj Application guidance: https://atlassianfoundation.atlassian.net/wiki/external/OTIzZTY4ZWRjMWQ5NDA4ZGFhYjBmMjVmMmQyNDNkZGI Applicants can also consult the foundation’s eligibility checklist, webinar information and step-by-step application guidance through the official application guide. Application Deadline and Selection Timeline The deadline is 30 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. AEDT. Organisations should account for the time difference between Australia and their country when planning submission. The foundation states that applicants will be notified of their application outcomes by 31 March 2027 AEDT. Organisations should use the period before the deadline to confirm eligibility, coordinate partners and develop a clear, evidence-based proposal. Why This Grant Matters for Global South Nonprofits Educational inequality remains a major challenge for communities with limited access to quality learning resources and emerging technologies. As AI changes how people learn and work, collaborative solutions could help ensure disadvantaged learners are not left further behind. For eligible nonprofits in Africa, Asia and other parts of the Global South, the Atlassian Foundation’s open call may provide an opportunity to scale initiatives through funding, technical support and collaboration. The strongest proposals will need to show not only that they address an important educational problem, but also that they bring multiple stakeholders together around a practical and sustainable solution. Organisations should review the official guidance carefully and ensure their applications clearly demonstrate direct relief of disadvantage, collective action and a considered approach to education in the AI era.
