The BiodivFuture 2026–2027 Joint Call is now open for transnational research and innovation projects addressing biodiversity, novel ecosystems and their socio-ecological consequences. The initiative is being launched by Biodiversa+, with funding from more than 30 organisations across 25 participating countries, together with the European Commission. The call is designed to support future-oriented research examining how human-driven environmental changes are reshaping ecosystems, the pathways through which novel ecosystems emerge and the implications of these transformations for biodiversity and society. Researchers and eligible organisations interested in participating must first submit a mandatory pre-proposal through the Electronic Proposal Submission System (EPSS). The deadline for pre-proposals is 10 November 2026 at 12:00 noon CET (11:00 UTC). What Is the BiodivFuture Joint Call? BiodivFuture focuses on research into novel ecosystems, their functioning, development pathways and socio-ecological consequences. The call recognises that ecosystems are undergoing significant changes driven by human activities and that some resulting ecological systems may differ substantially from historically prevailing conditions. Research funded under the initiative is expected to examine these changes across terrestrial, freshwater, marine and coastal environments and in regions around the world. Projects should contribute to understanding the causes and effects of ecosystem change while examining associated opportunities, risks and trade-offs. The initiative places particular emphasis on research that can generate actionable knowledge supporting resilient, interconnected, diverse and functioning ecosystems and contributing to the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Three Research Themes Proposals may address one or more of three non-mutually exclusive research themes. Theme A: Novel Ecosystem Functioning This theme focuses on understanding how novel ecosystems function and how their ecological processes interact with socio-cultural and socio-economic dynamics. Research may investigate mechanisms that influence biodiversity and develop approaches capable of facilitating biodiversity gains within changing ecosystems. Theme B: Pathways to Novel Ecosystems The second theme examines pathways through which novel ecosystems emerge and develop. Researchers can investigate plausible future trajectories and associated socio-ecological dynamics, particularly in situations involving uncertainty, temporal changes and complex environmental conditions. Theme C: Biodiversity Benefits and Equity The third theme addresses the fair and equitable sharing of biodiversity benefits in the context of novel ecosystems. Projects may explore inclusive and collaborative approaches, investment pathways and nature-positive socio-ecological transformations that consider different perspectives, contexts and stakeholders. Who Can Participate? BiodivFuture is structured around transnational research consortia rather than individual scholarship applications. Eligible consortia must include research teams from at least three countries financially participating in the call, including at least two different EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries. More than 30 funding organisations from 25 countries are participating. However, not every EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country is eligible under this specific call. Each participating research partner requesting funding must meet the eligibility requirements established by its relevant national or regional funding organisation. Applicants therefore need to review both the BiodivFuture call requirements and the specific funding rules applicable to their organisation and country. BiodivFuture is intended for innovative, high-quality research with clear transnational added value. Proposals are strongly encouraged to use interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches and may involve researchers from a wide range of academic disciplines. The call also encourages applicants to involve non-academic stakeholders in the co-production of actionable knowledge. Research should demonstrate how it addresses the concept of novel ecosystems and should consider the complex relationships between ecological, social, cultural and economic systems. Projects may examine biodiversity change, ecosystem functioning, environmental trajectories, social consequences, governance, equity and opportunities for nature-positive transformation. How Will Proposals Be Evaluated? The BiodivFuture application process consists of two stages. At the first stage, applicants submit a pre-proposal. These submissions will be assessed according to: Fit with the scope of the call. Novelty of the proposed research. Potential impact. Projects selected after the first stage will be invited to submit full proposals. At the second stage, full proposals will be evaluated according to: Scientific excellence. Quality and efficiency of implementation. Impact, including expected societal and policy impact. Stakeholder engagement. Research proposals must be submitted in English through the EPSS. Important Application Dates Researchers should take note of the following BiodivFuture timeline: Call launched: 9 September 2026. Pre-proposal deadline: 10 November 2026 at 12:00 noon CET (11:00 UTC). First-stage evaluation results: Mid-February 2027. Full proposal deadline: 16 April 2027 at 12:00 noon CEST (10:00 UTC). Funding recommendations: Late September to early October 2027. Expected project start: Between 1 December 2027 and 1 April 2028.
