Funding and Benefits The fellowship operates under the Full Economic Costing (FEC) model. The British Academy provides: 80% of salary costs Coverage of directly allocated research costs Contribution to indirect institutional costs This structure ensures that fellows can focus on research while receiving institutional support and resources. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following requirements: Academic Background Hold a doctorate in humanities or social sciences Have completed their viva between 1 April 2024 and 1 April 2027 Be at postdoctoral status at the time of application review Institutional Affiliation Must be based at a UK university or recognised research organisation for the duration of the fellowship Nationality Requirements Applicants are eligible if they: Are UK or EEA nationals (regardless of where the PhD was obtained) Hold a PhD from a UK university (any nationality) Can demonstrate a strong prior association with the UK academic community Research Focus The fellowship supports projects that contribute to advancing knowledge in the humanities and social sciences. Successful applicants are expected to: Undertake an original and impactful research project Produce high-quality, publishable outputs Engage with academic communities and contribute to scholarly discourse The programme encourages innovative and interdisciplinary research that addresses contemporary global and societal challenges. Application Process Applications must be submitted through the British Academy’s online system, Flexi-Grant®. Key Requirements Completion of the online application form Institutional approval from the host organisation Submission of a research proposal Support from one independent referee Referee Guidelines Must be self-nominated by the applicant Should ideally be an external examiner or independent academic Cannot be the applicant’s supervisor, mentor, or internal examiner Selection and Assessment Applications are assessed based on: Academic excellence and research potential Quality and originality of the proposed project Feasibility and impact of the research Applicant’s potential for long-term academic contribution Shortlisted candidates are evaluated by the Research Awards Committee.
