The MESPOM Consortium—comprising Central European University (Austria), Lund University (Sweden), the University of Manchester (UK), and the University of the Aegean (Greece)—invites applications for the 2026–2028 intake of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s in Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management (MESPOM). Coordinated by Central European University, the program offers an interdisciplinary learning experience that prepares future leaders to tackle complex global environmental challenges. Overview Established in 2005, MESPOM has trained more than 500 students from over 70 countries across five continents. The program equips graduates with the knowledge, analytical tools, and leadership skills necessary to address sustainability issues in international, social, and policy contexts. It integrates environmental science, management, and policy, enabling students to analyze real-world problems through a multidisciplinary lens. Students develop strong research and communication competencies, participate in applied projects, and gain exposure to real-life environmental practice through collaborations with businesses, government agencies, non-profits, and academia. The program’s emphasis on integrating theory and practice helps graduates become adaptable professionals capable of driving change in diverse global contexts. Academic Structure MESPOM is a two-year (120 ECTS) program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of environmental sustainability. The first year begins with fall and winter terms hosted by Central European University (CEU) in Vienna. During this stage, students take foundational and elective courses focused on sustainability challenges, environmental governance, and interdisciplinary research methods. In the spring term, students move to the University of the Aegean in Greece, where they explore environmental science courses in land, water, and ecosystem management, as well as sustainable tourism. The summer term is dedicated to internships, enabling students to gain professional experience under faculty supervision with partner institutions or other organizations. The second year offers a specialization option. Students choose between Lund University in Sweden, focusing on Environment, Industry, and Products, or the University of Manchester in the UK, focusing on Environment and Pollution Control. The final term is devoted to thesis research, which can be completed at any of the consortium universities, depending on individual academic and professional interests. Throughout their studies, students engage with cutting-edge topics such as sustainable energy and climate change, biodiversity conservation, urban sustainability, sustainable consumption and production, and environmental justice. The program provides exposure to diverse regional and professional perspectives, fostering a holistic understanding of environmental governance and management. Career Opportunities MESPOM alumni pursue impactful careers across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Graduates have joined governments, the United Nations, international organizations, academia, and industry. Many continue to doctoral studies, while others contribute to policy development, sustainability consulting, environmental research, and advocacy around the world. The program’s extensive alumni network supports professional growth through mentorship and collaboration opportunities. Financial Aid and Scholarships The program offers Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s (EMJM) scholarships funded by the European Commission. These scholarships cover travel, visa, installation, and subsistence costs for the entire duration of the two-year program. Both EU and non-EU students are eligible to apply.
