The General Residential Fellowship Programme at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) serves as the cornerstone of its fellowship offerings. Designed primarily for scholars in the humanities and social sciences, the programme attracts researchers from diverse backgrounds, institutions, and countries. Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent doctoral degree for at least three years at the time of application. For the 2027–28 cycle, candidates must have received their doctoral degree no later than 1 June 2023. Institutional affiliation is not required. Fellows may apply for: Autumn semester: 1 September 2027 – 17 December 2027 Spring semester: 11 January 2028 – 16 June 2028 Full academic year: 1 September 2027 – 16 June 2028 The application deadline is 1 June 2026 (23:59 CET). Candidates are advised to apply to only one fellowship programme to avoid administrative reassignment. Eligibility Criteria The programme welcomes early-career and senior scholars who demonstrate excellence in independent research: Early-career candidates: Must have a promising track record beyond postdoctoral work Should possess significant publications Expected to be active in international research forums Senior candidates (PhD held for at least ten years): Must have a substantial and original research record over several years Should maintain an active presence at the international forefront of their fields SCAS does not require candidates to hold a current university or institutional position. Remuneration and Support Fellows typically receive a monthly stipend. However, SCAS does not match the salary from an applicant’s home institution. Candidates are encouraged to explore alternative funding sources, including sabbatical support or grants. Accommodation provisions: SCAS generally provides and funds accommodation for fellows outside the Stockholm–Uppsala region When possible, local fellows unable to commute may also receive housing support Application Process All applications are evaluated by the Principal of SCAS in consultation with a selection committee composed of Long-term Fellows. Some applications may be shared with external referees, including those outside the EU/EEA. Key points for applicants: Submit applications well ahead of the deadline to allow sufficient time for support and technical assistance Applications are processed via the Varbi online system Notifications of fellowship decisions will be sent no later than 28 February 2027 Candidates changing email addresses should update their Varbi account to ensure communication continuity.
