Call for Applications: Human Past Fellowship Programme 2027–2028
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

April 9, 2026

Description

The Human Past Fellowship Programme, hosted by the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS), invites applications from scholars interested in interdisciplinary research on the human past. The programme provides a collaborative research environment where both early-career and established scholars can explore historical developments that have shaped human populations over the past 10,000 years. Funded by the Swedish Research Council, the programme operates within the Center for the Human Past, a recognized Center of Excellence dedicated to advancing research on human history through interdisciplinary methods. Scholars from fields such as archaeology, historical linguistics, population genetics, and related disciplines are encouraged to apply. The fellowship offers researchers the opportunity to focus on their academic work in a stimulating scholarly community while participating in seminars and academic events organized by the collegium. Fellowship Categories The Human Past Fellowship Programme offers two types of fellowships designed to support scholars at different stages of their academic careers. Advanced Fellowship The Advanced Fellowship is intended for established scholars with significant academic achievements and international recognition within their research fields. Eligibility requirements include: Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree awarded on or before 1 June 2019. Candidates must have at least seven years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application. Applicants should demonstrate a strong record of original research contributions and scholarly publications. Candidates should be actively engaged in international academic networks and research collaborations. This fellowship targets researchers who are already recognized leaders within their disciplines. Young Scholar Fellowship The Young Scholar Fellowship supports promising early-career researchers who are building their academic profiles and contributing innovative research within their fields. Eligibility requirements include: Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree awarded on or after 2 June 2019. Candidates should demonstrate strong independent research achievements at the postdoctoral level. Applicants should have a promising publication record and be engaged in international scholarly discussions. Early-career researchers with strong research potential are encouraged to apply for this fellowship category. Fellowship Duration Options Applicants may choose the duration of their fellowship based on their research needs and availability. Available fellowship periods include: Autumn Semester: 1 September 2027 – 17 December 2027 Spring Semester: 11 January 2028 – 16 June 2028 Full Academic Year: 1 September 2027 – 16 June 2028 Candidates can apply for either a single semester or the entire academic year. Research Focus of the Programme The Human Past Fellowship Programme focuses on interdisciplinary research exploring the history of human populations over the last ten millennia. This period represents a transformative phase in human history marked by significant cultural, demographic, and linguistic changes. The programme places particular emphasis on research related to three major historical migration and cultural expansion events: Indo-European expansion Bantu expansion Austronesian expansion Scholars working on these themes are encouraged to investigate the archaeological, genetic, linguistic, and cultural evidence associated with these historical movements. Research projects that combine multiple disciplinary perspectives are especially welcomed. Academic Environment The fellowship programme provides scholars with a dedicated environment for conducting research without the usual teaching and administrative responsibilities associated with university positions. However, fellows are expected to contribute actively to the intellectual community of the collegium. Academic participation includes: Attending interdisciplinary seminars and discussions Engaging with scholars from diverse academic backgrounds Participating in academic events hosted by the Center for the Human Past Contributing to collaborative intellectual exchange within the research community This environment encourages cross-disciplinary dialogue and collaboration among fellows. Remuneration and Benefits The Human Past Fellowship Programme provides financial and logistical support to help fellows focus on their research activities. Key benefits include: A monthly salary for the duration of the fellowship Access to a collaborative academic environment at the collegium Opportunities for interdisciplinary networking and collaboration The Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study typically provides accommodation for fellows who reside outside the Stockholm–Uppsala region. Accommodation support may include: Housing arranged and paid for by the collegium for visiting fellows Accommodation assistance for fellows who cannot commute to the collegium Fellows are encouraged to seek additional financial support from their home institutions, such as sabbatical funding or research grants. Eligibility and Institutional Affiliation Applicants are not required to hold a current university position at the time of application. Scholars from universities, research institutes, or independent research backgrounds are eligible to apply. The programme welcomes applications from researchers working across disciplines related to the study of human history and population development. However, candidates must apply to only one fellowship programme at SCAS. Submitting multiple fellowship applications within the institution will not increase the likelihood of selection. Application Process Candidates must submit their applications through the Varbi online application system. The selection process involves review by a committee and may include consultation with external academic referees. Applicants are advised to prepare their materials carefully and submit their applications well before the deadline to avoid technical delays. Application Deadline The deadline for submitting applications for the 2027–2028 fellowship cycle is: 1 June 2026 at 23:59 CET. Applicants will be notified of the final results through the Varbi application platform no later than 28 February 2027. Conclusion The Human Past Fellowship Programme at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study offers a unique opportunity for scholars to conduct interdisciplinary research on human history within a highly collaborative academic environment. By supporting both early-career and established researchers, the programme promotes innovative scholarship that deepens understanding of the historical processes shaping global populations. Researchers interested in exploring major historical migration patterns, cultural transformations, and interdisciplinary approaches to human history are strongly encouraged to apply.
