Postdoctoral researchers who have recently been awarded their PhD. Candidates who have undertaken more than five years of full-time research are unlikely to be considered under the standard criteria. However, the College recognises that individual academic careers can follow different paths. Candidates who have exceeded five years of full-time research may therefore present a case explaining why they should nevertheless be considered. This flexibility allows applicants with unusual career circumstances or research trajectories to explain their eligibility and circumstances within the application process. Fellowship Duration The Research Fellowships are offered on a fixed-term basis for three years. Appointments will normally commence on 1 October 2027, providing successful candidates with an extended period in which to develop their research programmes within the academic environment of Jesus College and the wider University of Cambridge. The fellowship offers early-career researchers an opportunity to establish themselves academically while benefiting from interaction with scholars across different disciplines. Salary and Benefits The remuneration for a Research Fellow is determined with reference to the University of Cambridge salary scale. The fellowship will provide a starting salary of £32,882, corresponding to step 35 of the University salary scale. The written work will allow the selection process to assess the applicant’s research quality and academic ability, while the 500-word statement should clearly demonstrate the significance and future direction of the candidate’s research programme. Applicants should ensure that their proposed research is presented clearly and demonstrates strong scholarly potential. What Makes a Strong Application? As the fellowships are targeted at early-career researchers, applicants should demonstrate a coherent academic trajectory and a clear research agenda. A competitive application should communicate: The originality and significance of the research. The applicant’s contribution to their chosen field. Evidence of strong research capability. The relationship between current research and proposed future work. The potential contribution of the applicant to the academic community. A clear and realistic plan for developing the research during the fellowship. Candidates who have completed or undertaken more than five years of full-time research should also use the application to explain any circumstances supporting consideration outside the normal early-career criteria.
