The Wahlgrenska Foundation has officially announced a new call for applications for its 2026 research funding programme aimed at supporting scholars working in media and communication studies. The foundation will award six general research grants worth SEK 100,000 each to researchers conducting innovative projects related to mass media, communication systems, and media’s role in society. According to the foundation, priority will be given to younger postdoctoral researchers with clearly defined research projects demonstrating strong academic quality and research potential. The initiative seeks to encourage advanced scholarly work examining the evolving role of media in both historical and contemporary contexts. Applications are open to researchers based in Sweden as well as international scholars working outside the country. Wahlgrenska Foundation Supports Research on Media and Society The funding programme focuses on research examining the role and impact of mass media, including traditional and digital communication platforms. The foundation noted that eligible projects may explore the production, dissemination, content, and societal influence of media systems across local, national, and transnational contexts. Areas of interest highlighted by the foundation include: Press and journalism Radio broadcasting Television media Digital and computer-based media Media production conditions Forms of expression and communication Media dissemination systems Media influence on public attitudes Media’s role in everyday life and society The foundation stated that research proposals may focus on historical developments, present-day issues, or future-oriented studies involving media and communication technologies. Young Postdoctoral Researchers Encouraged to Apply The Wahlgrenska Foundation emphasized that younger postdoctoral scholars with strong and well-structured research plans will receive priority consideration during the selection process. Applicants are expected to demonstrate: Proven research capability Strong academic qualifications Clear and feasible project plans High scientific quality in proposed research The foundation also noted that applicants should possess documented scholarly experience relevant to the proposed research field. International Researchers Eligible for Funding Unlike many nationally restricted funding programmes, the Wahlgrenska Foundation confirmed that researchers working outside Sweden are also eligible to apply for the grants. The international eligibility component is expected to attract scholars examining global media systems, transnational communication trends, and comparative media studies across different countries and regions. The foundation indicated that projects may adopt local, national, or international perspectives depending on the applicant’s research focus.
