Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2027/28: Fully Funded UK Scholarships for Students from Eligible Commonwealth Countries
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

October 9, 2026

Description

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) has officially opened applications for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2027/28, one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious fully funded scholarship programmes. Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the scholarship enables talented and motivated individuals from eligible low and middle-income Commonwealth countries to pursue full-time taught Master’s degrees at leading UK universities. Designed to support sustainable development, the programme identifies future leaders, innovators, and changemakers who have the potential to contribute significantly to the social, economic, and environmental development of their home countries after graduation. Applications are now open for studies commencing in September/October 2027, with the CSC application deadline set for 20 October 2026 at 16:00 BST. About the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship is part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP), reflecting the UK’s long-standing commitment to international education, global partnerships, and sustainable development. Rather than simply providing financial support, the scholarship invests in individuals with outstanding academic ability and demonstrated leadership potential who would otherwise be unable to afford postgraduate study in the United Kingdom. Awards are offered across the six CSC Development Themes, supporting academic disciplines that address pressing global challenges including health, science and technology, education, governance, resilience, and inclusive economic development. Who Is Eligible to Apply? The scholarship is open to applicants who are citizens of, or have refugee status from, an eligible Commonwealth country and are permanently resident in one of those countries. Candidates must be available to begin their studies in the UK in September 2027. Applicants are expected to hold a first degree equivalent to at least a UK Upper Second-Class (2:1) Honours degree by September 2027. Those with a lower second-class qualification may still be eligible if they also possess a relevant postgraduate qualification. Importantly, applicants must demonstrate that they cannot afford to study in the UK without the scholarship and must submit all required supporting documentation in the prescribed format. There is no age limit, and the CSC actively encourages applications from candidates of diverse backgrounds, including persons with disabilities through its contextualised nomination pathway. The CSC generally does not fund applicants who have already received a Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship or completed a Master’s degree in the UK unless exceptional justification is provided. What the Scholarship Covers The Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship provides comprehensive financial support throughout the duration of the programme, ensuring that scholars can focus entirely on their studies and professional development. Successful scholars receive: Full tuition fees paid directly to the university Return economy airfare between their home country and the UK Monthly living stipend of £1,712, or £2,000 for universities in the London metropolitan area Study travel grants for approved academic travel within the UK or overseas Additional child allowances for eligible single parents, widowed, or divorced scholars whose children reside with them in the UK Additional disability-related financial support following an individual needs assessment This generous funding package makes the scholarship one of the UK’s most comprehensive postgraduate awards for international students. How the Application Process Works Applications are submitted exclusively through the CSC Central online application system. The CSC does not accept applications or supporting documents submitted by email or other methods. Applicants are strongly encouraged to prepare their responses offline before completing the online form, as applications cannot be edited after submission. The system also uses two-factor authentication (2FA), requiring applicants to retain their application reference number and passcode throughout the application process. In addition to applying through CSC Central, every applicant must also apply through an approved nominator. The two recognised nomination routes are: National nominating agencies Selected non-governmental organisations and charitable bodies The CSC does not accept direct applications without nomination. Each nominator operates its own selection process and may establish additional eligibility requirements and separate application deadlines. Selection Process and Important Dates The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission follows a competitive multi-stage selection process. Nominators submit their selected candidates to the CSC by December 2026, after which the Commission conducts the final assessment. Applicants should note the following timeline: Applications Open: Now CSC Deadline: 20 October 2026 (16:00 BST) Nominator Submissions: December 2026 Study Begins: September/October 2027 Final Results: By July 2027 A nomination does not guarantee selection, and applicants are advised to monitor both their inbox and spam folders regularly, as scholarship offers may be withdrawn if recipients fail to respond within the specified timeframe. Scholar Commitments and Conditions Recipients of the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship are expected to return to their home countries immediately after completing their studies and contribute to national development. The scholarship does not permit switching to a UK Graduate Visa or remaining in the UK under another immigration route after the award ends. This commitment reflects the programme’s central objective: empowering exceptional individuals to apply their knowledge and leadership within their own communities and institutions. For aspiring professionals committed to creating meaningful impact across the Commonwealth, the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2027/28 provide an unparalleled opportunity to gain a world-class UK education while developing the expertise needed to drive sustainable development at home.
