Application Deadline
October 9, 2026
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) has opened applications for the 2027/28 Commonwealth PhD Scholarships, providing fully supported doctoral study opportunities at UK universities for talented candidates from eligible least developed countries and vulnerable states within the Commonwealth. Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the programme is designed for high-calibre graduates who demonstrate strong academic potential and the capacity to conduct research that can contribute to sustainable development in their home countries. The scholarships support full-time doctoral study beginning in September or October 2027 and are intended particularly for applicants who would otherwise be unable to afford doctoral study in the United Kingdom. Purpose of the Commonwealth PhD Scholarships The Commonwealth PhD Scholarship programme forms part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) and supports the UK’s broader international development objectives. Through the programme, scholars are expected to develop advanced research and teaching capabilities that can contribute to institutional and national development after they return home. The scholarships aim to: • Support research addressing development priorities in eligible Commonwealth countries.• Strengthen individual teaching and research capacity.• Contribute to the development of universities and other institutions in scholars’ home countries.• Promote international academic collaboration and partnerships.• Attract talented international researchers to UK higher education institutions.• Develop future leaders, teachers and researchers capable of contributing to national development. Successful candidates will undertake research aligned with one of the six CSC Development Themes, ensuring that funded doctoral work has clear relevance to development challenges. Who Can Apply? The scholarships are intended for outstanding graduates from least developed countries and vulnerable states classified by the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) that are members of the Commonwealth. Applicants should demonstrate the academic ability, research potential and commitment required to undertake world-class doctoral research with meaningful developmental relevance. Because individual nominators may establish additional requirements, candidates must also satisfy the eligibility conditions established by the nominating body through which they apply. Application Deadline and Study Period Applications for the 2027/28 academic year are currently open. Application deadline: 16:00 BST on 20 October 2026 Study commencement: September/October 2027 Applications must be submitted through the CSC’s online application platform, CSC Central. The CSC does not accept applications or supporting documentation submitted outside the official online system. Applicants are strongly encouraged to begin the process early because the online application system is expected to experience high demand close to the deadline. Late applications cannot be accepted where candidates fail to complete the submission process on time. How the Application Process Works Applicants cannot apply directly to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Candidates must apply through an approved nominator, with two main categories available: • National nominating agencies, which represent the principal application route.• Selected non-governmental organisations and charitable organisations. Each nominator conducts its own preliminary selection process and may establish additional eligibility requirements or an earlier internal deadline. Successful nominators will put forward an agreed number of candidates to the CSC in December 2026. Being nominated does not guarantee that an applicant will ultimately receive a scholarship, as final selections are made from the pool of nominated candidates. Candidates should therefore check the specific application requirements and deadlines established by their chosen nominating agency or organisation. Preparing the Online Application The CSC recommends that applicants prepare their responses carefully before entering them into the online application system. A template application form and guidance documentation are available to help candidates understand the information required. The CSC Central application system uses two-factor authentication (2FA). Applicants will need access to either a smartphone or a second email account during registration and subsequent logins. Candidates should also take care when completing the online form. The save function should be used regularly to prevent loss of information, while refreshing the browser can cause applicants to exit the form and lose unsaved data. Once an application has been submitted, it cannot be edited. Selection and Notification Nominators will submit their selected candidates to the CSC in December 2026. The CSC will then assess nominations according to its scholarship selection process and development priorities. Applicants can expect to receive the outcome of their applications by July 2027. Candidates should monitor all folders within their email accounts, including spam and junk folders, because scholarship offers may be withdrawn if applicants fail to respond to official communications within the specified timeframe. Why the Scholarship Matters The Commonwealth PhD Scholarships provide more than an opportunity to earn a doctoral qualification in the UK. The programme is structured to build research capacity and strengthen the contribution of highly talented individuals to development in their home countries. For eligible graduates with strong research ambitions, the scholarship can provide an important pathway towards advanced academic training, international collaboration and long-term professional leadership. Candidates interested in applying should begin identifying an appropriate UK university, developing a strong research direction and reviewing the requirements of their national nominating agency well before the deadline.
