Academic Fellowship Opportunity The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for the 2026–2027 DAAD Post-Doctoral Fellowships, hosted in Washington, D.C. This prestigious fellowship supports outstanding early-career scholars conducting research on the theme “The United States, Europe, and World Order.” Up to two post-doctoral fellowships will be awarded for the 2026–2027 academic year, offering an exceptional opportunity to engage with leading scholars and practitioners in international relations, strategy, and global affairs. Institutional Context SAIS is a division of Johns Hopkins University and a globally recognized institution for interdisciplinary education and research in international affairs. It prepares professionals for leadership roles in diplomacy, policy, security, and international development, while fostering rigorous scholarship and cross-cultural exchange. DAAD Post-Doctoral Fellows will be affiliated with the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs, a leading research hub focused on geostrategy, statecraft, and world order. The Center brings together distinguished faculty, visiting practitioners, and fellows to address complex global challenges through historically informed and policy-relevant research. The fellowships are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with the generous support of the German Federal Foreign Office. Fellowship Overview Fellowship period: Minimum duration: 9 months Maximum duration: 12 months Fellowship window: July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027 Applicants must indicate preferred start and end dates within this period Location: Washington, D.C., United States Academic year focus: “The roles of the United States and Germany at a crucial moment in world history” Research Focus and Academic Engagement During the fellowship period, DAAD Post-Doctoral Fellows will: Conduct original research aligned with the theme “The United States, Europe, and World Order” Participate in: High-level academic seminars Peer review and research workshops Structured engagement with senior foreign policy practitioners Complete at least one substantial research paper related to the fellowship theme Continue progress on independent research agendas Collaborate with: The Helmut Schmidt Distinguished Visiting Professor The Kissinger Center academic team Fellows will also contribute to: A German–U.S. conference on international security, transatlantic relations, and historically informed statecraft, hosted in Germany A summer workshop in Washington, D.C. on grand strategy and international security for early-career academics and policymakers Compensation and Benefits Each DAAD Post-Doctoral Fellow will receive a comprehensive financial and academic support package, including: Salary: Up to USD 6,000 per month, minus applicable U.S. taxes Approximate annual salary: USD 72,000 Research support: Up to USD 3,000 for a 12-month stay Travel support: One economy-class round-trip airfare to Washington, D.C. (for non-U.S. citizens) One economy-class round-trip airfare to the conference in Germany Health coverage: Basic health care package provided Optional coverage for accompanying dependents: USD 560 per month for one dependent USD 880 per month for more than one dependent Institutional access: Workspace and computer access Internet access Full access to Johns Hopkins University libraries and facilities Fellows are responsible for securing their own accommodation and covering living expenses. Eligibility and Qualifications Applicants must meet the following criteria: Hold a doctoral degree or be at the post-doctoral level Demonstrate strong research capacity and scholarly potential Be fluent in English Be eligible for a J-1 visa (for non-U.S. citizens) EU and U.S. citizens are eligible to apply EU applicants should be: Currently affiliated with a German university or research institution Preference will be given to applicants who are no more than six years beyond completion of their dissertation, although candidates outside this range will also be considered.
