Master’s Degree Requirement Candidates whose Master’s examination has not yet been completed may still apply under specific conditions. Such applicants must provide a statement from their Master’s thesis supervisor confirming when the thesis will be submitted and when the examination is expected to take place. If awarded a scholarship, the candidate must provide the Master’s degree certificate to the DDEA Secretariat no later than six months after receiving the grant notification. Failure to provide the certificate within the required period, or failure to pass the Master’s examination, may result in withdrawal of the PhD scholarship. Important Application Restrictions DDEA has introduced specific restrictions for the 2026 scholarship round. Applicants should note that: • Each candidate may apply for only one DDEA PhD scholarship per application round across the various DDEA PhD scholarship calls. • Principal Investigators can host only one 2/3 DDEA-funded PhD scholar or one two-year DDEA-funded postdoctoral fellow at a time, subject to the programme’s conditions. • Applicants must clarify their proposed supervisor’s eligibility and existing DDEA-funded commitments before applying. DDEA reserves the right to reject applications that do not comply with these requirements. Supervisor and Host Institution Requirements The principal supervisor plays an important role in the eligibility of the proposed PhD project. The supervisor must be employed at the faculty of the Danish university where the applicant intends to enrol and must hold an associate professor or professor position in the relevant research area. Applicants should therefore establish communication with their prospective supervisor and confirm that the supervisor can host the proposed DDEA-funded PhD scholar before submitting an application.
