Application Deadline

September 23, 2026

Description

Denison University’s Department of Religion is inviting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Religion specializing in Islam. The position is based at Denison’s residential liberal arts campus in Granville, Ohio, and is scheduled to begin in August 2027. The university is seeking a broadly trained scholar whose teaching and research engage with diverse historical, cultural, and geographic contexts within the Islamic tradition. The successful candidate will join a department undergoing an exciting curricular restructuring and will have an opportunity to contribute to the future direction of the academic study of religion at Denison. Position Overview The Assistant Professor will contribute to Denison University’s undergraduate Religion curriculum through teaching, research, advising, and service. Teaching responsibilities are expected to include an introductory course in the study of religion, a survey course on Islam, thematic seminars focused on Islamic traditions, and additional topical or theoretical courses that support the Religion major. The successful candidate will also teach writing-intensive courses that fulfill the university’s writing program requirements. Denison’s standard teaching load is five courses per academic year. The university is particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate education and who can thrive in an interdisciplinary liberal arts environment. Candidates should be prepared to create engaging classroom experiences that encourage critical inquiry, intellectual curiosity, thoughtful dialogue, and meaningful engagement with diverse perspectives. Teaching and Research Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda in Religious Studies and Islamic Studies, producing scholarly work and demonstrating continued professional development toward tenure. Denison values faculty members who integrate teaching and scholarship while contributing actively to the intellectual life of the college. The Assistant Professor will therefore participate in advising, departmental activities, college service, student-faculty research collaborations, and other initiatives that strengthen the university’s academic community. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach effectively in a liberal arts setting and should articulate a clear vision for their current scholarship and future research trajectory. Qualifications Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Religion, Religious Studies, Islamic Studies, or a closely related field, with the degree completed by the start of the appointment in August 2027. Candidates should demonstrate: Strong teaching potential in Religious Studies and Islamic Studies. A clear commitment to undergraduate liberal arts education. An active and promising research agenda. The ability to teach Islam across diverse historical and geographic contexts. An interest in interdisciplinary approaches to the study of religion. The ability to develop effective, active-learning experiences for undergraduate students. Potential for scholarly publication and continued professional growth. Application Requirements Applicants are required to submit a complete application dossier containing a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a two-page teaching philosophy statement, and three letters of reference. The teaching statement should specifically address the candidate’s approach to teaching Islam and Religious Studies within a liberal arts environment. Applicants should also provide evidence of teaching effectiveness and explain how they would create engaging and inclusive learning experiences for undergraduate students. Candidates should further present a strong vision for their scholarship and explain the anticipated trajectory of their future research. Teaching syllabi will be requested from the top 10 candidates at a later stage of the selection process. Faculty Support and Benefits Denison University provides a supportive environment for teacher-scholars who value both classroom excellence and sustained research. Faculty members have access to an annual professional development account, competitive professional development funding, workshops, mentoring opportunities, and a one-semester research leave following a successful pre-tenure review. The university also supports student-faculty research collaborations and provides stipends for faculty supervising summer research students. The position includes a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package. Eligible dependents may receive tuition benefits for study at Denison or affiliated colleges, while faculty members also benefit from a generous retirement contribution. About Denison University Denison University is a highly selective residential liberal arts college with approximately 2,400 students drawn from across the United States and around the world.
