The grant programme aims to advance academic research and public understanding of graphic culture by supporting innovative projects within the humanities and social sciences. According to the foundation, the initiative promotes the study of visual expression and communication shaped by printing technologies, reproduction systems, and the concept of multiplicity. Applications for the 2026 grant cycle opened on April 1, 2026, and will remain open until June 15, 2026. DNP Foundation Expands Support for Graphic Culture Research The DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion defines “graphic culture” as forms of visual communication and expression influenced by printing, printmaking, graphic design, photography, and related reproduction technologies. Through the research grant initiative, the foundation seeks to encourage academic inquiry while ensuring that research outcomes are shared with wider society. The programme supports both individual and collaborative research projects that contribute to the preservation, documentation, and advancement of graphic culture studies. According to the foundation, the grant programme is divided into two major research categories. Category A Focuses on Graphic Culture Research The first category supports general research related to graphic culture across a wide range of academic disciplines. Eligible research areas under Category A include: Graphic design Printing and printmaking Photography Art history Design history Aesthetics Art education Visual culture studies Cultural sociology The foundation stated that the category encourages interdisciplinary approaches examining how visual culture and printed media shape communication, artistic practices, and social experiences. Category B Supports Graphic Culture Archives and Documentation The second category focuses on research and projects related to graphic culture archives and preservation systems. Examples of eligible archive-related research include: Creation of graphic design archives Photography archive development Cataloguing and organization methods Publishing and digitization systems Research data models Archival preservation practices The foundation noted that Category B aims to strengthen long-term preservation and accessibility of graphic culture materials for future research and public engagement. Eligibility Requirements for Applicants The grant programme is open to scholars and researchers working in fields related to graphic culture. Eligible applicants include: Full-time researchers employed at universities, museums, libraries, archives, and research institutions Faculty members and curators Archivists and librarians Independent researchers recommended by a university professor, museum director, or equivalent expert For applicants who are not permanently employed at research institutions, a recommendation from a qualified academic or professional supervisor is required. The recommender must possess expertise in the relevant field and may include current or former supervisors or senior professionals. Grant Duration and Funding Amount The DNP Foundation stated that successful applicants may receive funding support for either one-year or two-year research periods. Grant periods include: One-year projects: January 1, 2027, to December 31, 2027 Two-year projects: January 1, 2027, to December 31, 2028 Selected researchers may receive grants of up to 500,000 Japanese Yen (JPY) per year to support project implementation, archival activities, and academic research expenses. Screening Process and Notification Timeline Applications will undergo evaluation by the foundation’s official screening committee, which is composed of prominent academics, designers, researchers, and cultural experts from leading Japanese and international institutions. Members of the 2026 screening committee include scholars and professionals affiliated with institutions such as: The University of Tokyo Kyoto Institute of Technology Tama Art University Victoria and Albert Museum Kyoto Art Center The foundation announced that applicants will be able to check their application results through the online application system in October 2026. Successful research topics will also be published on the foundation’s website. Application Process and Required Documents Interested applicants must first complete registration through the foundation’s online application system before submitting their proposals. Required submission documents include: Research Plan Form Recommendation Form (where applicable) Supporting research information The foundation clarified that full-time researchers at universities, museums, and research institutions are generally exempt from submitting recommendation letters. After uploading all required documents, applicants must finalize submission through the online portal. A confirmation email will be sent upon successful application completion.
