Application Deadline
November 4, 2026
The Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) has opened applications for Edition 14, covering the 2027–2029 academic period. The two-year international Master’s programme provides advanced education in migration studies, intercultural relations, and empirical research methods through a global consortium of partner universities across Europe, Africa, and Asia. EMMIR is designed for students who want to develop expertise in migration-related issues, cultural diversity, social transformation, and international relations. The programme prepares graduates for careers in research, policy development, humanitarian work, international organisations, education, and community engagement. Application Categories and Deadlines EMMIR offers three application pathways depending on applicants’ funding status: Scholarship applicants. Non-fee-paying self-funded applicants. Fee-paying self-funded applicants. Scholarship and non-fee-paying applicants must submit their applications by 20 December 2026 at 23:59 CET (Germany time). Fee-paying self-funded applicants may apply until study places are filled or until 15 July 2027, whichever comes first. Applicants who submit by the scholarship deadline will receive admission notifications beginning in April 2027. Fee-paying applicants applying later in the cycle will generally receive decisions within approximately four to eight weeks after submission. Application Process and Timeline The EMMIR application process is completed through the eMundus online application platform. Applicants must first register using their name and email address before accessing the application form. The main application steps include: Registering on the eMundus platform. Completing the online application form in English. Uploading all required documents in PDF format. Submitting the application before the relevant deadline. Receiving confirmation of successful submission. After submission, applications are evaluated by the EMMIR team and consortium partners. The EMMIR Selection Board meets at the end of March 2027 to determine successful candidates and establish a reserve list. Successful applicants receive notification letters from April 2027 and must submit certified hard copies of their documents within 10 calendar days. Final admission is completed after verification of submitted documents and arrival at the host institution. The Edition 14 programme begins on 1 September 2027, with students expected to arrive in Oldenburg, Germany before the start date. Required Application Documents Applicants must upload several supporting documents as part of their online application. All documents must be provided in English or accompanied by an official English translation. Required documents include: A valid passport copy. Curriculum vitae (CV). A statement of purpose explaining motivation for studying EMMIR. First university degree certificate and academic transcript. Proof of language proficiency. Other relevant supporting documentation. The statement of purpose should clearly explain the applicant’s interest in migration studies, intercultural relations, and the goals they hope to achieve through the programme. Applicants should ensure that personal information entered in the application form matches the details shown in uploaded documents, as this information will be used for official admission documents and certificates. Academic Background and Knowledge Requirements Applicants are expected to demonstrate knowledge related to migration studies, intercultural relations, and empirical research methods. This may include completed university modules, research papers, essays, examinations, or other relevant academic experiences. The application section requires concise responses, with a maximum allowance of 480 characters. Applicants without extensive previous knowledge are encouraged to explore introductory migration resources before applying. EMMIR recommends that candidates use these resources to develop their understanding rather than simply reproducing academic content in their applications. Document Verification and Admission Requirements Applicants who receive an offer of admission must submit certified true copies of required documents. These include: Signed printed copy of the online application. Passport copy. Certified copies of degree certificates and transcripts. Language proficiency documentation. Documents must be submitted through registered mail or courier services, with proof of dispatch and tracking information provided to the EMMIR team. Applicants should submit certified copies rather than original documents, as submitted materials cannot be returned. Documents that are not properly certified or officially translated may result in withdrawal of the admission offer. Accessibility and Inclusion Commitment EMMIR promotes equal opportunities and welcomes applications from candidates regardless of gender, disability, marital status, parental status, ethnic background, religion, or social origin. The programme provides support measures for students with disabilities or additional needs. Through Erasmus+ funding opportunities, enrolled students may receive assistance such as: Classroom support services. Personal assistants or note-taking support. Adaptive learning technologies. Additional tutoring. Specialised transportation. Interpretation services. Individualised accessibility solutions. Applicants requiring additional support are encouraged to disclose their needs during the application process so appropriate arrangements can be discussed confidentially. Preparing a Competitive Application EMMIR receives a large number of applications each year, making careful preparation essential. Candidates are encouraged to ensure that their applications are complete, accurate, and aligned with programme expectations. Strong applicants should demonstrate: Academic preparation relevant to migration and intercultural studies. Clear motivation for joining the programme. Research interests connected to migration and social transformation. Commitment to international collaboration and diversity.
