The Evelyn L. Pruitt National Fellowship for Dissertation Research has opened its 2026 application cycle, offering competitive research funding for women pursuing doctoral studies in geography and related fields. Purpose of the Fellowship The fellowship aims to support high-quality dissertation research conducted by women PhD candidates in geography or related disciplines. It is designed to strengthen academic scholarship and encourage field-based and analytical research with global relevance. The program supports students engaged in dissertation research during the 2026–2027 academic year, particularly those conducting fieldwork or advanced data analysis. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following requirements: Be women enrolled in PhD programs Be studying geography or geographically related disciplines Be enrolled in doctoral programs at universities in the United States Ideally have: Completed comprehensive exams An approved dissertation proposal Active engagement in dissertation research during 2026–2027 Preference is given to candidates who are well advanced in their doctoral work and ready to conduct field research. Fellowship Value and Funding The fellowship provides approximately 10 awards annually, each worth up to $12,000 USD. Funding may be used for: Fieldwork and travel expenses Data collection and analysis Research-related living expenses (housing, food, etc.) Writing and dissertation preparation However, it does not cover tuition, university fees, or conference travel. Funds are disbursed through the recipient’s university following approval of documentation. Application Requirements Applicants must submit a complete application packet including: All materials must be combined into a single PDF document and submitted via email. Evaluation Criteria Applications are reviewed based on: Academic quality and rigor of the dissertation proposal Potential significance and impact of the research Candidate’s professional development and future contribution to geography Feasibility of the research plan Financial need (considered in final selection rounds) Strong emphasis is placed on scholarly excellence and long-term academic impact. Application Timeline Deadline: April 30, 2026 (11:59 PM EST) Notification of results: First week of June 2026 Late submissions are not accepted.
