The Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB–JSP), established in April 1988 and funded by the Government of Japan, provides outstanding citizens from ADB’s developing member countries with the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in leading academic institutions across Asia and the Pacific. The program supports approximately 135 graduate scholarships annually, fostering the development of future leaders who will contribute to the socioeconomic advancement of their home countries. Upon completion of their studies, scholars are expected to return home to apply and disseminate their newly acquired knowledge and skills, driving sustainable growth and development. Participating Academic Institutions The ADB–JSP partners with 25 selected universities and institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, including 15 in Japan. These institutions are recognized for their academic excellence and relevance to the program’s development-oriented fields of study. Examples include: Leading Japanese universities and graduate schools. Regional centers of excellence in economics, science, and development studies. Scholarship Benefits The ADB–Japan Scholarship Program provides comprehensive financial support, covering both academic and living expenses. The scholarship package includes: Full tuition fees for the approved graduate program. Monthly subsistence allowance, including housing costs. Books and instructional materials relevant to the course of study. Medical insurance for the duration of the program. Travel expenses, including airfare between the scholar’s home country and the host institution. Additional benefits may include: Thesis or research grants for scholars conducting fieldwork or preparing dissertations. Coverage for preparatory language courses, computer literacy training, or other essential academic preparation, when deemed necessary. This comprehensive funding ensures that scholars can fully focus on their academic pursuits and research activities. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria to qualify for the ADB–Japan Scholarship Program. While details may vary by institution, the general requirements include: Citizenship of an ADB developing member country. Admission to an approved master’s degree program at a participating institution. A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with an outstanding academic record. At least two years of professional work experience (preferably related to the chosen field of study). Demonstrated proficiency in English (both written and spoken). Good health and the ability to complete the program successfully. Commitment to return home after graduation to contribute to national and regional development. Applicants currently residing or working in a country other than their home country are generally not eligible. Similarly, individuals already enrolled in graduate programs are not considered for the award.
