EY South Africa has opened applications for its 2027 Bursary Programme, providing financial support and a potential pathway into the Chartered Accountancy profession for talented students pursuing the CA stream. The bursary programme is aimed at students who demonstrate strong academic potential, commitment to becoming Chartered Accountants and, where applicable, financial need. Applications opened on 1 July 2026 and will close on 30 September 2026. EY 2027 Bursary Programme The programme forms part of EY South Africa’s commitment to developing the next generation of Chartered Accountants and supporting students from school through university and into professional employment. Bursaries are awarded to applicants whose academic performance indicates their potential to qualify as Chartered Accountants, with financial circumstances also considered for the relevant bursary category. There are two bursary options: Academic Merit with Financial Need Bursary: May cover one or more costs, including tuition, accommodation, books and meals. Academic Merit Bursary: Covers a portion of tuition fees. Students who receive an EY bursary are required to work at EY for the duration of their training contract, which has a minimum three-year period. Who Can Apply? EY has opened applications for both Matric Applicants and University Applicants pursuing the Chartered Accountancy stream. University applicants are expected to provide documentation demonstrating their academic performance, identity and financial circumstances. Required documents include: Curriculum vitae. Certified South African identity document. Certified Matric certificate. Certified full academic record, including 2026 mid-year results. Parent’s payslip or an affidavit confirming unemployment. Student’s three-month bank statement. Applicants are instructed to combine the required documents into a single PDF and upload the merged file under the Additional Optional Attachment section of the application. Requirements for Matric Applicants Students currently completing Matric can also apply for the bursary opportunity. Matric applicants are required to submit: Curriculum vitae. Certified identity document. Certified Matric certificate and Grade 11 documentation. Certified Grade 11 full report. Grade 12 Term 1 and Term 2 results. Parent’s payslip or an affidavit confirming unemployment. EY encourages applicants to carefully prepare their documentation before submitting their applications. Three-Year EY Training Contract A major feature of the EY bursary opportunity is the potential progression into a structured Chartered Accountancy training contract. The training contract lasts three years, with trainees taking on increasing responsibilities as they progress. During the first year, trainees, referred to as assistants, become familiar with clients and their businesses before progressing toward the first qualifying examination, the Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC). Second-year trainees, known as seniors, assume greater responsibility within their teams and work toward the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC). Third-year trainees, known as supervisors, take on management responsibilities, including running client assignments and supervising and coaching junior trainees. After successfully completing the training contract and meeting the relevant professional requirements, trainees can register with SAICA as Chartered Accountants (CA(SA)). What Does a Chartered Accountant Do? Chartered Accountants play an important role in analysing financial information and assessing business risks. Their work can help organisations understand their financial position, identify potential risks and make informed decisions. They can also provide assurance that supports investor confidence and contributes to the financial sustainability of organisations. For students interested in accounting, finance, business advisory and professional services, the EY bursary can therefore provide an opportunity to combine university studies with a structured pathway toward professional qualification.
