What the Selection Committee Looks For Applications are initially assessed across three principal areas: the quality of the proposed project, the applicant’s qualifications and the contribution the project can make to the Fulbright mission. For academic study and research applications, reviewers consider factors such as the feasibility of the proposed project, methodology, timeline, appropriate host-country affiliation and the connection between the proposed work and the host country. Applicants are also assessed on their academic or professional record, relevant training, accomplishments, extracurricular activities and language preparation where required. Fulbright Mission and Community Engagement The programme seeks applicants whose proposed projects contribute to international educational exchange and mutual understanding. Applicants should demonstrate how they intend to engage with their host communities and contribute to meaningful exchange between people and institutions in the United States and abroad. The selection process also considers programme-specific preference factors established by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and individual Fulbright Commissions or U.S. diplomatic posts. November–December 2026: Eligible applications are reviewed by National Screening Committee panels. Reviewers are full-time faculty members at U.S. institutions with relevant disciplinary or regional expertise. By the end of January 2027: Applicants receive an initial notification indicating whether they are recommended or non-recommended. January–April 2027: Recommended applications are forwarded to U.S. Embassies, binational Fulbright Commissions, the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for further review. March–June 2027: Final decisions are traditionally released on a rolling basis. Applicants may be notified as Finalists, Alternates or Non-Selects. A Finalist award remains subject to conditions including available funding, suitable placement, research clearance where required, medical clearance, visa requirements and completion of required grant documentation. Grant Period and Departure Grant dates vary according to the academic calendar of the host country and the requirements specified in each country’s award description. For the 2027–2028 academic year, grants must begin no later than 1 June 2028. Research applicants are expected to provide a realistic project timeline in their Statement of Grant Purpose. Applicants may also need to participate in orientation programmes in their host country where applicable.
