The FAO–Hungarian Government Scholarship Programme 2026–2027, coordinated through the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, is now open for applications. This fully funded opportunity supports outstanding students from eligible countries to pursue advanced studies in agricultural and life sciences at leading Hungarian universities, contributing to global capacity-building in food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural development. Delivered under a long-standing agreement between FAO and the Government of Hungary, the programme aims to strengthen human capital in partner countries by providing high-quality postgraduate education aligned with FAO’s mandate and national development priorities. Available Master’s Degree Programmes For the 2026–2027 academic year, the scholarship supports the following Master of Science programmes taught entirely in English, subject to the minimum enrolment requirements being met: Master in Agricultural BiotechnologyHungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Szent István Campus, Gödöllő Master in Animal Nutrition and Feed Safety EngineeringHungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Kaposvár Campus, Kaposvár Master in Plant ProtectionUniversity of Debrecen, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management, Debrecen These programmes are designed to equip graduates with advanced technical expertise and applied skills relevant to agricultural innovation, biosecurity, and sustainable food systems. Scholarship Coverage and Benefits The FAO–Hungarian Government Scholarship is fully funded, with all eligible student-related costs covered by the Hungarian Government. The scholarship includes: Full coverage of application and tuition fees for the entire study period Provision of basic books and academic notes Dormitory accommodation Monthly subsistence allowance Comprehensive health insurance The scholarship supports students only. Family members are not covered under this programme. Eligible Countries and Territories Applicants must be nationals and residents of one of the eligible countries or territories. These include countries across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, such as Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Myanmar, Namibia, Nigeria, the Philippines, Serbia, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam, Yemen, and many others. Eligibility is strictly based on both citizenship and residency, and applications from candidates outside the approved list will not be considered. Application and Selection Process The selection process for scholarships commencing in September 2026 is conducted in two distinct phases: Phase One: FAO Pre-ScreeningFAO reviews and pre-screens applications before submitting eligible and complete dossiers to the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture. The Ministry then forwards applications to the respective universities selected by applicants. Only complete applications are considered, and submissions missing required documentation or applicant identification are automatically excluded. Phase Two: University SelectionShortlisted candidates may be required to undertake a written or oral English language examination as part of the university admission process. Final selection decisions are made exclusively by the participating universities, without FAO involvement. Successful applicants are notified by both the university and the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture. Selection Criteria Candidates are assessed competitively based on the following criteria: Citizenship and residency in an eligible country Strong academic performance and excellent school achievements Demonstrated English language proficiency Clear motivation and alignment with the programme’s objectives Good physical and mental health Age preference for candidates under 30 years Application Timeline and Submission Applications for the 2026–2027 intake must be submitted by email during the official application window: Application period: 21 January – 28 February 2026 Applicants are strongly advised to carefully review the official course descriptions, application procedures, and required documentation before submitting their applications.
