Heriot-Watt University Launches New Global Scholarship Programme Heriot-Watt University has launched a new international scholarship programme aimed at supporting women from Sub-Saharan Africa to pursue postgraduate education over the next five years. The initiative, known as the Hoogenboom Scholarship Programme, will provide fully funded Master’s-level opportunities for women whose education is expected to deliver lasting impact within their communities and professional sectors. About the Hoogenboom Scholarship Programme The Hoogenboom Scholarship Programme is designed to empower women to address pressing environmental and sustainability challenges while building capacity in key global development sectors. By investing in women’s education, the programme seeks to strengthen communities, promote long-term economic stability, and develop future leaders equipped to respond to complex global issues. The programme has been made possible through a €1.5 million gift from The Orchard Foundation (Stichting De Boomgaard), a Netherlands-based philanthropic organisation co-founded and chaired by Dutch businesswoman and philanthropist Dr Annemiek Hoogenboom, who also co-founded Novamedia and launched the UK People’s Postcode Lottery. Leadership Perspectives Professor Richard A. Williams, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University, described the initiative as a transformative opportunity that aligns with the university’s mission to deliver global impact through education. He emphasised that investing in women’s education is one of the most effective ways to strengthen communities and foster sustainable economic growth, particularly in regions facing persistent joblessness and skills gaps. Dr Annemiek Hoogenboom noted that the programme is intended to contribute to stronger ties between Europe and Africa, while expanding access to education for talented young women across the continent. The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to grow the Empower through Education campaign. Programme Structure and Funding The scholarship programme will support 30 women over five cohorts, with the first intake beginning in September 2026. Applications will remain open until early 2030 for the final cohort. The scholarships are fully funded and are designed to remove financial barriers to postgraduate study. Each scholarship will cover: Full tuition fees Living costs, including accommodation Visa and health insurance expenses Access to mentorship and leadership development Industry placements and professional development opportunities Eligible Degree Programmes Scholars will have the opportunity to pursue postgraduate degrees aligned with sustainability and environmental priorities, including: MSc Global Environmental Change and Policy MSc International Marine Science MSc Sustainable Energy Eligibility and Priority Countries The programme will prioritise applications from women who are nationals of the following countries: Kenya Zambia South Africa Botswana Malawi This focus aligns with Scotland’s international development priorities, particularly in Zambia and Malawi. Applicants must also have completed their undergraduate studies at a member institution of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Academic Environment and Delivery The programme will be delivered at the Lyell Centre, located on Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh campus. The Lyell Centre is recognised as one of Europe’s leading hubs for Earth and marine science and technology. It brings together world-class academics, industry partners, and international collaborators to address challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and marine conservation.
