Fully Funded PhD Scholarships in the UK for 2027: UBEL ESRC Studentships Offer Tuition Fees and £23,805 Annual Stipend
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

November 1, 2026

Description

Applications are open for the UBEL ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) Studentships for 2027 entry, offering aspiring doctoral researchers an opportunity to pursue postgraduate research in the social sciences at six London universities in the United Kingdom. The competitive studentships provide funding for tuition fees at the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) rate and an annual maintenance stipend. For the 2026/27 academic year, the published funding includes tuition fees of £5,238 and a minimum annual stipend of £23,805, including the London Allowance. The programme welcomes applications from both UK home and international candidates, although international applicants face a funding allocation limit. Prospective applicants should begin preparing early because the competition involves several application stages, with the preliminary application deadline falling in November 2026. About the UBEL ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership The UBEL DTP delivers Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-funded doctoral training across 30 disciplinary pathways, organised into six subject groupings and delivered through six London institutions. The partnership aims to support high-quality social sciences research by combining doctoral study with structured research training, professional development and opportunities to gain experience through placements. Applicants can explore pathways in their chosen research area and identify a suitable university and potential supervisor before beginning the application process. Participating Universities The UBEL DTP brings together six London-based institutions: University College London (UCL) Birkbeck, University of London SOAS University of London London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) University of Greenwich University of East London Applicants should review the available disciplinary pathways at these institutions to identify the most appropriate match for their proposed research. What Does the Studentship Cover? The UBEL ESRC studentships provide financial support for doctoral study and research training. Key funding benefits include: Tuition fee funding: Fees covered at the applicable UKRI rate. Annual maintenance stipend: A minimum of £23,805 for the 2026/27 academic year, including the London Allowance. Research training: Structured training designed to strengthen doctoral research skills. Professional development: Opportunities to develop transferable skills relevant to academic and non-academic careers. Placement opportunities: Students may undertake a high-quality placement in academia, government or policy, business, or civil society. The ESRC’s new doctoral funding model generally provides 3.5 years of funding for the standard full-time PhD route, rather than the traditional three years. Eligible placements can provide an additional three months of funded time and stipend, subject to the applicable funding arrangements. The partnership also offers different study routes, including pathways with integrated master’s-level training. Available routes and funding periods depend on the selected pathway and the applicant’s qualifications. Important: The published stipend and tuition fee figures relate to 2026/27. Applicants should consult the official 2027-entry guidance for confirmed funding rates and the terms applicable to their chosen pathway. Who Can Apply? The competition is open to eligible UK home and international applicants interested in undertaking doctoral research in one of the partnership’s disciplinary pathways. Candidates should normally hold, or expect to achieve by 30 September 2027, a first-class or upper-second-class honours degree, a master’s degree from a recognised UK university, or an equivalent qualification obtained outside the UK. For the +3.5-year funding route, applicants would normally need a master’s degree that includes an appropriate level of research training. Applicants should also have a research proposal that aligns with an available pathway and should engage with a potential supervisor at one of the participating universities before submitting their application. Can International Students Apply? Yes. International candidates are eligible to apply, including applicants from countries across the Global South, provided they meet the academic and other eligibility requirements. However, international applicants should pay particular attention to the funding restrictions. Under ESRC conditions, UBEL may allocate no more than 30% of its total studentships across competitions to international students. Competition for these places can therefore be particularly strong. The partnership notes that it cannot cover visa costs for international students. Applicants should seek immigration and visa guidance from their proposed institution’s visa compliance team. Candidates should consult the official UKRI eligibility guidance to establish whether they qualify as home or international students, particularly where residency status may affect classification. How to Prepare a Strong Application Before applying for ESRC funding, prospective candidates should: Choose a research pathway: Explore the 30 available disciplinary pathways across the six partner institutions. Develop a research proposal: Identify a clear research question and demonstrate how the proposed study fits the selected pathway. Contact a potential supervisor: Discuss the proposed research with an academic at the intended institution. Contact the pathway leader: Seek information about the relevant pathway and its application requirements. Review the official guidance: Read the 2027 application guidance, preliminary application instructions and FAQs before submitting materials. The competition has a preliminary stage followed by a full application stage for candidates who are successful at the initial stage. Applicants must therefore pay close attention to the deadlines and instructions for each phase. Application Deadlines for 2027 Entry Applicants should note the following key dates published by UBEL DTP: 30 October 2026: Pre-registration deadline, 23:59. 9 November 2026: Preliminary application deadline, 23:59. 11 December 2026: Pathway teams provide decisions to the DTP. 14 December 2026: Full application stage opens for successful preliminary applicants. 1 February 2027: Full application deadline, 23:59. Week commencing 19 April 2027: DTP Board confirms studentship awards for 2027 entry. The preliminary application deadline is 9 November 2026. Applicants should complete the required pre-registration by 30 October 2026 and allow sufficient time to prepare their documents. How to Apply Interested candidates should visit the official UBEL DTP website to review the available research pathways, eligibility requirements, application guidance and supporting documents. Before starting the process, applicants should identify their preferred pathway, contact a potential supervisor and consult the relevant pathway leader. The official competition information and application guidance are available through the UBEL DTP website here For enquiries, candidates can contact the UBEL DTP team at Ubel-dtp@ucl.ac.uk.
