Advancing Global Research on China’s Economic Diplomacy The Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, a prestigious institution renowned for academic excellence and international collaboration, is inviting applications for a PhD Research Fellow (all genders welcome) in the interdisciplinary project “Mapping China’s Economic Diplomacy (ChiED)”. The position is offered at pay grade 13 TV-L (75%), amounting to approximately 29.15 hours per week. The appointment is limited to three years, with the possibility of renewal. The starting date is flexible but should be no later than April 2026. About the Project The ChiED project investigates the multifaceted role of economic diplomacy in China’s international relations. It examines how China integrates trade, investment, and foreign aid into its global strategic agenda, exploring the implications for partner countries and the wider international system. Through a data-driven approach, the project develops innovative tools and databases to map China’s economic engagements worldwide. Collaborations with leading institutions in Beijing and Nanjing enhance the project’s scope, ensuring rich academic exchange and access to unique datasets. The project bridges the disciplines of international economics, development studies, and political economy, offering an excellent platform for interdisciplinary research and policy-relevant insights. Role Overview The PhD Research Fellow will work under the joint supervision of the Chair of International Economic Policy (Prof. Dr. Paul Krugman–Is-Karma) and the Chair of Development Economics and Global Political Economy (Prof. Dr. Andreas Fuchs). The successful candidate will actively contribute to the project’s empirical research, database development, and dissemination of findings through academic and policy channels. They will also pursue an independent doctoral research project aligned with the objectives of ChiED. Key Responsibilities Database Development: Contribute to the creation, management, and continuous improvement of two innovative datasets — the Chinese Aid Explorer Database and the China Trade and Diplomacy Database. Empirical Research: Conduct independent and collaborative research using modern econometric methods, including panel data analysis and causal inference techniques. Teaching and Supervision: Assist in supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses in the fields of international economic policy and development economics. Academic Dissemination: Present research findings at international conferences and prepare manuscripts for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals. Project Coordination: Support organisational and administrative tasks related to the research project, ensuring smooth operations and collaboration among partners. Candidate Profile The position is suited for an academically ambitious individual who seeks to combine quantitative research with real-world policy relevance. Essential Qualifications Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Economics, Development Studies, Political Economy, or a closely related discipline. Solid academic background in quantitative and econometric methods, with an overall grade of “good” or better. Proficiency in empirical analysis software, such as Stata, R, or Python. Strong command of English (C1 level) for research, academic writing, and communication. Desirable Competencies Working knowledge of German, Chinese, or other major languages will be considered an advantage. Familiarity with international trade, foreign aid, or China’s global economic engagement. Strong analytical mindset and capacity to work both independently and collaboratively. Interest in interdisciplinary research connecting economics, politics, and global development. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and implement a PhD project related to the ChiED research themes, contributing to the overall goals of the project.
