The Fellowship is specifically intended for professionals with 20 or more years of work experience who are considering their next professional or personal challenge and want to direct their talents towards creating lasting social impact. The inaugural cohort will begin in August 2027 at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. About the Fellowship The Fellowship provides an opportunity for experienced professionals to step back from their established careers, reflect on their purpose and explore how their expertise can contribute to a greater good. Throughout the year, Fellows participate in two concurrent core courses, immersive experiences, exclusive policy briefings and intergenerational learning through student mentorship. Participants may also audit selected additional Georgetown courses. A central feature of the programme is the development of an individual Purpose Plan. Each Fellow works throughout the year to create a practical plan focused on an issue of their choosing and identifies meaningful steps they can take after completing the programme. Who Can Benefit from the Programme? The Fellowship is designed for established professionals with 20+ years of work experience who are looking to transition towards a new challenge or apply their accumulated experience in a different way. The programme may be particularly relevant to professionals interested in areas such as: Education reform Affordable housing Public health Global relations Sustainability Democracy Ethics Environmental issues Racial justice Other societal challenges Participants are expected to bring substantial professional experience while remaining open to intellectual growth, reflection and collaboration across disciplines. Programme Objectives The Fellowship aims to help participants prepare for their next chapter by combining academic learning, ethical reflection and practical action. Fellows will have opportunities to: Develop strategies for addressing a societal issue of interest Explore questions of meaning and purpose Strengthen intellectual and personal growth Build ethical frameworks for decision-making Collaborate with peers from interdisciplinary backgrounds Participate in intergenerational learning through student mentorship Develop a Purpose Plan for continued work after the programme Expert and Policy Engagement Fellows will have access to exclusive policy briefings involving academics, policymakers, experts and scholars working in Washington, D.C. Customised Learning Experience The Fellowship allows participants to customise their programme journey around their professional expertise and interests. Fellows can focus on subjects that are relevant to their Purpose Plan while exploring Georgetown’s wider academic environment. The programme encourages participants to consider how their existing knowledge, networks and experience can be redirected towards meaningful social impact. Although the programme is grounded in this tradition, Georgetown states that it welcomes people from all religious and cultural backgrounds. Why This Fellowship Is Valuable For professionals with decades of experience, the Fellowship offers an opportunity to reassess how their expertise can contribute to challenges beyond their previous career roles. Its combination of academic learning, policy engagement, mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration and practical planning can help participants develop a clearer direction for their next chapter. The Purpose Plan also gives Fellows a structured mechanism for translating reflection and learning into practical action. How to Prepare Prospective Fellows should consider the societal issue they would most like to address and how their professional experience could contribute to solving it. It is also useful to identify the knowledge, networks and skills they could bring to an interdisciplinary cohort, while considering how Georgetown’s academic and policy environment could support their longer-term objectives.
