Application Deadline

October 11, 2026

Description

Loughborough University Commonwealth Scholarships 2027 are offering a fully funded route for eligible students from selected Commonwealth countries to undertake postgraduate research in the United Kingdom. The scholarships are designed to support PhD research with potential developmental impact while strengthening research and teaching capacity in Commonwealth countries. The funding opportunity is available for applicants commencing eligible research degrees in October 2027, February 2028 or July 2028 at Loughborough University’s campuses. Successful scholars can receive full tuition fee support, a stipend for three years and return airfare to the UK, making the programme particularly significant for talented researchers who would otherwise be unable to afford doctoral study in the UK. Loughborough University Commonwealth Scholarships 2027 The Commonwealth Scholarships are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and administered through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). The programme supports PhD research that can contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries. According to Loughborough University, the scholarships also seek to strengthen individual teaching and research capacity, contribute to institutional development in academic and other sectors, and encourage collaboration between researchers in the UK and Commonwealth countries. The opportunity is aimed particularly at high-calibre international applicants who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. What the Scholarship Covers The Loughborough University Commonwealth Scholarships provide substantial financial support throughout the doctoral programme. Successful applicants can receive: Full tuition fee coverage A stipend for three years Airfare to and from the United Kingdom Potential family allowance for some eligible students The scholarship is available for eligible postgraduate research programmes beginning in October 2027, February 2028 or July 2028 at either Loughborough University campus. This package can significantly reduce the financial barriers associated with undertaking doctoral research overseas, particularly for students from developing Commonwealth countries. Eligible Countries The opportunity is open to citizens of selected Commonwealth countries. The countries listed by Loughborough University are: Bangladesh, The Gambia, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda and Zambia. Applicants should carefully confirm that their nationality and residency status meet the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s requirements before beginning the application. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must satisfy several eligibility conditions to be considered. Candidates must be citizens of, or have been granted refugee status by, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person. They must also be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country. Applicants must be available to begin their studies in the UK by the start of the relevant UK academic year in September 2027. Academically, applicants must hold by September 2027 a first degree at least equivalent to an upper second-class (2:1) honours standard. Candidates holding a lower second-class degree may also qualify if they have a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a Master’s degree. Applicants must also not already be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university or in their home country before September/October 2027. Another key requirement is financial need: applicants must be unable to afford to study in the UK without the scholarship. Applicants Must Secure Nomination and University Admission Meeting the general CSC eligibility criteria does not automatically guarantee consideration. Applicants must apply through an eligible nominating body, such as the relevant organisation in their home country. Nominating bodies conduct their own selection processes and may impose additional eligibility requirements or earlier deadlines. Candidates must also submit an application through the CSC’s online CSCCentral system. Loughborough University states that the CSC will not accept applications submitted outside its online application system. In addition, applicants need to secure an offer of study from Loughborough University. The university advises interested candidates that they must apply to both the CSC and their home country’s nominating body as part of the scholarship process. Eligible Research Programmes The scholarship covers all postgraduate research programmes at Loughborough University’s Loughborough or London campus that begin in October 2027, February 2028 or July 2028. This makes the opportunity potentially relevant to candidates across a broad range of doctoral research areas, provided the programme and applicant satisfy the applicable Commonwealth Scholarship requirements. Prospective applicants should therefore identify a suitable research programme, review the university’s admission requirements and allow sufficient time to secure an offer before completing the scholarship process. Application Deadline The deadline listed by Loughborough University is 20 October 2026 at 16:00 BST (15:00 GMT). Because applicants must complete multiple stages involving the CSC, a nominating body and Loughborough University, prospective candidates should begin preparations well before the final scholarship deadline. Nominating bodies may also set their own closing dates, which can differ from the CSC deadline.
