The application deadline is 31 August 2026. Who Can Apply for the GMHAC2027 Scholarship? The scholarship programme is open to individuals with demonstrated involvement or interest in mental health in Africa. Eligible applicants include: • Early-career researchers working in mental health research, practice or policy. • Students pursuing relevant studies, provided they can submit a letter of support from their institution or supervisor. • People with lived experience of mental health conditions or psychosocial disability. • Other applicants with a demonstrated connection to mental health in Africa. Applicants who fall into another relevant category are expected to clearly explain their connection to mental health in Africa within their application. Priority will be given to applicants based in Africa who require financial support in order to participate in GMHAC2027. What the Scholarship Can Cover Applicants can request financial support for one or more costs associated with attending the conference. Eligible requests may include: • Conference registration fees. • Travel expenses. • Accommodation costs. • Other relevant participation-related expenses, which applicants must specify in their applications. Applicants may request support for any combination of these expenses depending on their individual circumstances and financial needs. Application Requirements Applicants are required to complete the scholarship application online and provide information demonstrating their eligibility, motivation and financial circumstances. The application requires: • Personal details, including name, email address, telephone number and country of residence. • Institution or organisation details and current role. • A motivation statement of no more than 300 words explaining why the applicant wants to attend GMHAC2027 and how participation would affect their work. • An impact and contribution statement explaining how the applicant’s work advances mental health research, policy or services in Africa. • Information on how the applicant’s work incorporates people with lived experience or community engagement. • A financial need statement of no more than 300 words explaining why financial support is necessary. • Curriculum vitae or résumé. • Recommendation letter for student applicants. A recommendation letter is also strongly encouraged for applicants from the other eligible categories. Financial Need and Impact The scholarship programme places particular emphasis on financial need and the potential impact of participation. Applicants are expected to demonstrate why attending GMHAC2027 would be valuable to their professional, academic, advocacy or community work and explain how their work contributes to improving mental health research, policy or services in Africa. The application also provides an opportunity for applicants to demonstrate their engagement with communities and people with lived experience of mental health conditions or psychosocial disabilities. Scholarship Selection Process Scholarship places are described as strictly limited and competitive. Meeting the eligibility requirements does not automatically guarantee that an applicant will receive funding. Applicants are expected to provide complete and accurate information. Successful applicants will be notified by email and will receive additional information concerning scholarship coverage and participation requirements. The scholarships are non-transferable.
