The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Graduate School is now accepting applications for the Summer Research Programme 2026, a prestigious 10-week intensive research training programme designed for outstanding students from around the world. The programme offers participants the opportunity to engage in advanced research, receive mentorship from leading academics, and experience HKU’s vibrant postgraduate research environment. The application period runs from January 9, 2026 (10:00 AM HKT) to February 9, 2026 (5:00 PM HKT, GMT+8). The programme will take place from June 1 to August 7, 2026. About the Programme The HKU Summer Research Programme is tailored for high-achieving undergraduate and master’s students who are considering research postgraduate studies. Through close mentorship, structured research training, and networking activities, participants gain first-hand exposure to doctoral-level research and academic life at one of Asia’s leading universities. The programme combines individual research projects with professional development activities, enabling participants to strengthen their research skills while building meaningful academic connections. Key Benefits for Participants Participants selected for the programme will receive a range of academic, professional, and financial benefits. Academic and Research Benefits One-to-one mentorship with an eminent HKU professor, who will guide the planning and execution of an individual research project Opportunity to engage in original research within an HKU faculty, department, or interdisciplinary research area Participation in research presentations, seminars, and skills-building workshops Financial Support HK$10,000 scholarship awarded upon successful completion of the programme Airfare reimbursement up to HK$5,000 University accommodation reimbursement up to HK$5,000 Students residing or currently studying in Hong Kong are eligible for accommodation support only Recognition and Future Opportunities Prizes and awards for top-performing participants Potential conditional offer of the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship for exceptional participants with strong academic records The Presidential PhD Scholarship provides funding of up to HK$439,500 in the first year and HK$422,000 per year thereafter during the normative study period Eligibility and Target Participants The programme is open to elite students who demonstrate strong academic performance and a clear interest in research. Eligible Applicants Include Outstanding Year 3 or Year 4 undergraduate students with a CGPA of 3.6 or above (or equivalent) Outstanding Master’s students holding a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours (or equivalent) Selection Criteria Applicants are assessed based on: Academic excellence Strong interest in postgraduate research Previous research experience Interest in interdisciplinary research High proficiency in English Ability to work independently and demonstrate maturity Faculty, Research Area, and Mentorship Each participant will be affiliated with an academic unit at HKU and supervised by a professoriate staff member. Applicants must indicate in their application: Proposed faculty or interdisciplinary research area Department and field of study One or more preferred faculty mentors Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact proposed mentors prior to submitting an application. While HKU provides lists of potential mentors, applicants may also identify suitable supervisors through faculty websites or the HKU Scholars Hub. Important Note:The Faculty of Law will not accept applications for the Summer Research Programme 2026. Application Process Applications must be submitted through HKU’s online application system. Required Application Materials Personal and academic information Proposed faculty, department, field of study, and mentor(s) Personal statement (300–500 words) addressing: Motivation for applying Expected learning outcomes Short- and long-term career goals Relevant HKU postgraduate programmes of interest Research interest statement (100–200 words) outlining preferred research topics Supporting documents: Passport-sized photograph Curriculum vitae highlighting academic and research achievements Academic transcripts and certificates English language proficiency test results (where applicable) Programme Timeline January 9 – February 9, 2026: Application period Mid-February – March 2026: Selection process By end of March 2026: Announcement of results By mid-April 2026: Visa application for non-local students June 1 – August 7, 2026: Programme duration Weeks 1 and 2 may be conducted online. All participants are required to attend the programme in person at HKU from June 15, 2026 onward, unless prior approval for delayed arrival is granted. Programme Highlights Participants will engage in a comprehensive range of academic and enrichment activities, including: Individual research projects under faculty supervision Research skills lectures and seminars Project presentations Team-building workshops Networking and extracurricular activities Opening and completion ceremonies Visa Requirements for Non-Local Students Participants without the right of abode or right to land in Hong Kong must apply for a student visa through the Hong Kong Immigration Department immediately after receiving an offer.
