Description

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in partnership with George Washington University Law School, will host the 2026 Summer School on the Legal Framework for Nuclear Energy from 16 to 25 June 2026. This flagship academic initiative forms part of the IAEA University Partnership Programme on Nuclear Law and aims to build the next generation of nuclear law professionals. The programme offers postgraduate students a comprehensive understanding of the international and national legal frameworks governing nuclear energy. Programme Overview The IAEA–GW Summer School provides an intensive academic platform designed to: Strengthen knowledge of nuclear law principles Examine international legal instruments and regulatory structures Explore safety, security, safeguards, and liability frameworks Build capacity among future legal and technical experts Promote global cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy The course combines expert lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions led by leading practitioners and academics in nuclear law. Eligibility Requirements The Summer School is open to students from IAEA Member States who meet the following criteria: Academic Background Applicants must: Hold a bachelor’s degree Be currently enrolled in an accredited postgraduate university programme Demonstrate proficiency in English Priority will be given to students in: Nuclear law International public law Energy law Environmental law Other relevant legal disciplines Students from related non-law fields such as engineering, physics, or other technical disciplines may also apply, provided they are enrolled in postgraduate studies. Application Procedure Applications must be submitted online through the official application portal. Application Deadline: 27 February 2026 Important notes: Applications must be completed in English All required supporting documents must be submitted Incomplete applications will not be considered Applicants are encouraged to prepare documentation early to ensure full compliance with submission requirements. Selection & Participation Selected candidates will be notified with further details regarding: Programme schedule Logistical arrangements Preparatory reading materials Participants are expected to: Attend all sessions Actively contribute to discussions and case studies Complete assigned work before and during the programme A Certificate of Completion will be issued to participants who meet attendance and participation standards. Programme Schedule & Format The 2026 Summer School will be conducted virtually. Live sessions will take place: 09:00–13:00 EDT (Washington, D.C.) 15:00–19:00 CEST (Vienna) Participants must ensure availability during these hours for the full duration of the programme (16–25 June 2026).
