Consultancy Opportunity with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is recruiting a Climate and Gender Consultant based in Nairobi, Kenya, to support innovative research at the intersection of climate change and human mobility. This consultancy (Job ID: 19148) is hosted within the Climate Mobility Innovation Lab (CMIL) Africa, a regional initiative focused on addressing the complex links between climate change, migration, and development across Africa. About the Climate Mobility Innovation Lab (CMIL) Africa The Climate Mobility Innovation Lab (CMIL), hosted by IOM, works at the forefront of research and partnerships addressing the growing challenges of climate mobility. As climate change reshapes livelihoods and environments, patterns of migration are evolving — often with gendered consequences. CMIL Africa is commissioning a gender-sensitive needs assessment to better understand how climate change affects mobility differently across genders. The findings will inform future programming, strategy development, and capacity-building initiatives to ensure that climate adaptation solutions are inclusive, evidence-based, and locally grounded. The consultant will report directly to the Head of CMIL Africa and collaborate closely with IOM headquarters, regional thematic specialists, and country missions. Key Responsibilities The Climate and Gender Consultant will lead the development of a comprehensive gender-sensitive needs assessment, including: Research and Methodology Conducting an in-depth desk review of literature and existing methodologies Identifying knowledge gaps related to gender and climate mobility Designing a mixed-methods research framework Developing a detailed methodology, roadmap, and workplan Needs Assessment Development Drafting a gender-sensitive needs assessment report Conducting focus group discussions with experts and practitioners Identifying gender-differentiated risks, barriers, and opportunities in climate mobility innovation Building institutional and community capacity to integrate gender-responsive approaches Validation and Finalization Designing and leading a validation workshop Incorporating stakeholder feedback into the final report Delivering actionable recommendations to guide CMIL Africa’s strategy and programming Communication and Knowledge Sharing Preparing communication materials to disseminate findings Presenting results at a CMIL workshop or conference Delivering two knowledge exchange and capacity development workshops Deliverables and Performance Indicators The consultant will be evaluated based on the delivery of: An inception report outlining methodology and workplan A draft gender-sensitive needs assessment A validation workshop and summary report A finalized needs assessment report with clear recommendations Two capacity development workshops, including materials and feedback documentation Required Qualifications and Experience Education Master’s degree (or higher) in climate adaptation, environmental science, migration studies, gender studies, or a related field Professional Experience Proven expertise in qualitative and quantitative research on gender and migration Strong knowledge of datasets related to gendered impacts of climate change Experience designing surveys and qualitative data collection tools Background in gender-responsive climate programming Demonstrated ability to work independently and coordinate across multidisciplinary teams in Africa Experience with participatory and community-based approaches is considered an asset. Required Skills and Competencies The ideal candidate will demonstrate: Excellent analytical and writing skills tailored to both technical and policy audiences Strong project management and organizational capacity Effective stakeholder engagement and cross-team collaboration Knowledge of climate migration and disaster resilience Fluency in English is required and will be assessed during the selection process.
