Legal Action Worldwide (LAW) has announced an opportunity for a Legal Fellow (South Asia) to support its work on human rights, international justice, and accountability in complex and conflict-affected contexts. The remote fellowship will focus particularly on the Myanmar/Rohingya crisis and Afghanistan, providing successful candidates with practical exposure to the work of a frontline legal organisation. The fellowship is designed for law students and recent law graduates who are interested in international human rights law, international criminal law, sexual and gender-based crimes, strategic litigation, advocacy, and accountability for serious human rights violations. About Legal Action Worldwide Legal Action Worldwide is an independent non-profit organisation comprising human rights lawyers and jurists working to ensure that survivors of human rights violations and international crimes can access justice. LAW operates across fragile and conflict-affected settings in 18 countries, working alongside survivors, affected communities, and civil society partners. Its activities include credible documentation, evidence preservation, strategic litigation, advocacy, technical assistance, and support for justice institutions. The organisation applies a survivor-centred, gender-competent, and trauma-informed approach to its work, with the broader objective of strengthening accountability and the rule of law. About the Legal Fellowship The Legal Fellow will support LAW’s legal research, policy, advocacy, and accountability initiatives relating to international crimes and human rights violations. A significant component of the fellowship will involve work on sexual and gender-based crimes and violations affecting women and girls. The Fellow will contribute to research, legal information dissemination, advocacy engagements, stakeholder coordination, documentation, capacity building, and knowledge management. The position is fully remote, with preferred working hours requiring some core overlap between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Indian Standard Time (IST). The fellowship structure is flexible and can be undertaken through either of the following arrangements: Part-time at a minimum of 40% FTE, or approximately 15 hours per week, for at least one law school semester. Full-time for three to six months. The initial three-month fellowship may be extended up to six months, subject to funding and satisfactory performance. Key Responsibilities The successful Fellow will contribute to several areas of LAW’s legal and advocacy work. Research, Policy and Advocacy Responsibilities will include: Conducting research on public international law, international criminal law, and international human rights law. Researching issues involving sexual and gender-based crimes and women’s and girls’ rights. Providing research inputs for public reports, policy briefs, and evidence-based advocacy materials. Supporting advocacy strategies and engagements with international institutions and forums. Assisting with side events, briefings, advocacy meetings, and related preparations. Drafting and editing legal information for victims and survivors. Monitoring developments in international law and relevant policy processes. Supporting stakeholder engagement with Member States and other accountability actors. Programme and Partner Support The Fellow will also assist with programme implementation and partner coordination. This may involve: Supporting adaptation of training materials on credible documentation of crimes and human rights violations. Assisting with documentation and note-taking during capacity-building activities. Supporting knowledge management and partner coordination. Compiling information for joint advocacy and network engagement. Assisting with funding proposals and concept notes. Supporting protection interventions for LAW’s clients as directed. Eligibility and Required Skills The fellowship is primarily intended for LLM students, final-year undergraduate law students, or recent law graduates. Applicants should have: Knowledge of International Human Rights Law or International Criminal Law. Fluency in English. Strong legal research and drafting abilities. Excellent analytical and attention-to-detail skills. Ability to work independently in a remote environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong technical literacy. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Previous professional or volunteer experience in research, human rights, or non-profit organisations is desirable. Familiarity with the Afghanistan context is considered an additional advantage. Start Date, Duration and Compensation The fellowship is expected to commence in September 2026. Its duration will depend on the selected arrangement and can range from one academic semester for part-time fellows to three to six months for full-time fellows. LAW will provide a reasonable stipend, subject to applicable local laws and regulations. The organisation particularly encourages applications from candidates who are eligible to receive academic credit through their university or who have secured, or can secure, external funding or grants. The final compensation arrangement will take into account the Fellow’s circumstances, including working hours, student or recent graduate status, and availability of external funding.
